Over the last couple of decades, we have garnered an international reputation for innovation and caring through the relationship between students and faculty, state-of-the-art facilities and beautiful campuses, teaching methods, or global education. Today is an incredibly exciting time to be joining Appleby as we embark on a school-wide initiative, the integration of Positive Education in support of enhancing student well-being and social-emotional learning skills. We also recently opened the A.W.B. Alumni Centre for Athletics and Student Life. This spectacular building, the largest in the school's history, is an essential element in the delivery of our overall educational program to meet our expanding academic and co-curricular aspirations. High school culture must be central to the excellent student experience. We take pride in creating an environment where students know that they belong, where they find areas that they love, and where they both experience and contribute to a community that cares. We believe in growth through challenge. However, equally, we believe that supporting young people is the best way to empower them to succeed in the face of that challenge. Ever since its establishment in 1911, Appleby College has been focused on the purpose that inspired the Founders: to develop leaders of strong character who will make a positive impact on their communities. Society has changed dramatically over the last century, and each Appleby generation has had its own distinct experience. The challenges facing graduates and their communities' nature are continually evolving, so has and must Appleby. The world of today and that our students will be making their contributions is increasingly dominated by unabated change – economic, socio-political, environmental, and technological. Communities are becoming more interconnected, blended, and global, and many societal structures and systems are being eliminated or reinvented. This brings great opportunities for those who are prepared. In order for our alumni to lead, contribute, and flourish in this world, we believe that they require a variety of skills and characteristics built on self-awareness, which together reflect the whole person. Appleby graduates must be adaptable, determined, and resilient. They must be able to capitalize on changes by facing persistent curiosity, a creative problem-solving mindset, global literacy, superb intercultural and interpersonal abilities, and critical thinking skills to provide greater clarity in an increasingly complex and ambiguous world. At the same time, we expect our graduates will be defined by those traits that make caring, responsible citizens: strong empathy, compassion, courage, integrity, a spirit of service to others, and a well-developed moral compass.
