Washington Academy is an independent secondary school committed to the success of each of our local, national, and international students. Offering a comprehensive program of academics, athletics, and the arts, we strive to create opportunities that will equip students socially and intellectually for their future endeavors and prepare them to become productive members of society.
For more than 225 years, Washington Academy has been successfully helping young people take the first big step toward achieving their dreams. We recognize these dreams are as diverse as the students who attend here. Each year, over 400 students like you decide to attend WA, coming together to immerse themselves in courses and make use of an environment that is not typically available at other secondary schools.
We're sure you will find a program or activity at Washington Academy that fits your unique personality, whether in the Center for Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, or the Field School for Studies in Science or the Center for Applied Technologies. Once you arrive, we'll assign you a long-term advisor and a peering pair who will help you choose your courses, manage your schedule, and get into the swing of your new life at the Academy. With a student-to-teacher ratio of 11:1, it won't be long before your teachers know you on a personal level. The safety of our rural area, the involvement of our small Maine community, and the sense of pride and tradition will all come together to make you ready to succeed in your new environment.
As one of Maine's oldest academies, Washington Academy has been meeting students' educational needs in grades 9–12 since John Hancock signed the school's charter in 1792. Considering each student's differences, the Academy creates opportunities that equip students socially and intellectually for their future endeavors. The curriculum offers rigorous college preparation that includes honors, AP, and university classes while being flexible enough for students who seek quality business and technology education and everything in between. Emphasis is placed on the performing and visual arts, math and sciences, and community involvement.
The Academy's 75-acre campus is located in a safe, rural community in coastal Downeast Maine, just 2 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, where the air is clear, and the water is clean! The location enhances the nurturing environment created by a low student-teacher ratio, individualized attention, and a welcoming community. The area also provides excellent recreational opportunities, including kayaking, sailing, fishing, hiking, and nature walks. Nearby Machias offers restaurants, banks, shopping, and the university campus.
WA welcomes short term study students - one semester, two months, even one month. You decide when it is best for you. Enjoy one of Maine's best seasons….summer! Our summer programs combine athletics with outdoor experiences, recreation, fun with Intensive ESL, TOEFL Prep and College Writing, and even more academic classes that allow you to earn up to four credits each summer.
With higher-degreed faculty, small class sizes, 99% matriculation rate for international students, three dormitories on campus, new athletic facilities, and a commitment to community, WA welcomes YOU - a highly motivated, curious, creative, out-of-the-box individual who is seeking a unique educational experience as a U.S. high school boarding student.
