At West Hill Park we endeavor to balance academic rigor with preparation for a life of adventure, challenge, responsibility, and fun. As a traditional boarding school, we build on the Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum to prepare children for Common Entrance and a wide range of scholarships. Whether an academic scholarship to Harrow, a music scholarship to Canford, or a Sports Scholarship to Millfield our children go on to achieve outstanding success by the end of Year 8.
Traditional education can also be progressive, and we have our eye firmly on the future: our teaching is innovative, embraces technology, and makes the most of our fabulous grounds and facilities. We have an excellent reputation for music and the arts and our pupils enjoy performing or exhibiting their work. A wide range of trips and sporting opportunities complement the broad range of subjects on offer at West Hill. Throughout the Early Years Foundation Stage, we aim to provide a wide range of positive learning experiences in a safe and stimulating environment. There is an emphasis on learning through play and exploration and the Early Years Centre is resourced to excite the interests of every child and to support independent learning. We make use of the Revised Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, using it as a guide to creating a broad and balanced curriculum that provides opportunities for children to make excellent progress across the Prime and Specific Areas (details of which are given below). By tapping into the expertise of the Music, Sports, Art, and French specialists in the main school, we can extend the experiences and potential learning well beyond the Early Learning Goals
The indoor learning environment is spread through four classrooms, a large art area, a library, and an open plan area, and is supported by and extended into a range of outdoor learning environments. We encourage essential development across all areas, including investigation, exploration and active learning, energetic physical play, quiet contemplation, and creative and imaginative play. Timetabled sessions allow for regular excursions to our outdoor classroom and wildlife pond.
