Our school is highly structured, and we pride ourselves on the warm, welcoming place we have created where children feel valued and safe. We provide differentiated access to the Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum, and to our very successful creative arts curriculum.
At Sybil Elgar, we are always looking for innovative ways to inspire your child and to address their specific learning requirements. We aim to provide your child with the confidence and skills they need to find enjoyment and fulfillment in what they do. We constantly strive to help them achieve their full potential, ready for adult life. Sybil Elgar School is on three sites in West London.
Our early years, primary and secondary site, known as Havelock, is in Southall. It is in a residential area next to the local primary school and is light, spacious, modern, and welcoming. We offer an average class size of no more than eight children – often our classes are much smaller, with two or three children. There is lots of one-to-one support as well.
Our sixth form is in a separate, secure building on the campus of the local college in Acton. It is known as Woodlands. Woodlands is in a really good location for our students, being part of the lively campus of the college and only a few minutes walk from the busy center of Acton itself. Our students have easy access to the facilities and sessions at the college, and they can safely attend several courses there with our support.
We are always developing our curriculum so that it meets the specific needs of children with autism. The most important things we teach are self-confidence, empowerment, problem-solving, working together, self-esteem, and valuing others. We are constantly aware of how your child’s autism affects their learning and experience of the world around them and we know that developing their communication, social and life skills will help them to learn better.
Every student at Sybil Elgar has a truly personalized curriculum and timetable. Your child learns at their own pace and according to their own needs and interests. We always find a way to deliver the learning your child needs. Students learn traditional academic subjects alongside the life skills they’ll need to become confident young adults. At every stage, students have their timetable, which we plan according to their ability, needs, and interests.
The student’s timetable includes support from our resident psychologists, speech and language therapist, and occupational therapist. We teach all the academic subjects of the National Curriculum. Our long experience of teaching children with autism lets us deliver each subject in a practical and structured way that plays to the student's strengths. Our students have a range of abilities and our high staffing levels mean we can provide small group teaching as well as individual support.
