St. Winefride’s Catholic Primary School is a small 1.5 form entry school in the London Borough of Newham in the Catholic parishes of St. Stephen and St. Nicholas in the Brentwood Diocese of London. The proportion of pupils eligible for free school meals is well above average. The majority of pupils are of Black African and Caribbean background and the remainder are mostly of Eastern European background or Asian minority ethnic heritage.
Pupils at St. Winefride’s make outstanding progress and there is outstanding provision for pupil welfare, support, and guidance throughout the school. There is an emphasis on the continued development in not just the core academic subjects but also the foundation curriculum. Children develop and foster good social, moral, and personal skills through positive peer and staff role models.
The school aims to create a wonderful home-school partnership built on a foundation of our love of Jesus that will result in success for the children.
The school has a recently upgraded playground, astroturfed sports area, and the opportunity to use the local park for additional sports. The dining hall doubles up as the indoor PE area and gymnasium. There is also a quiet reflection area and garden in the playground to further enhance the children’s break time experience.
At St Winefride’s we treat all the children and staff as part of one big happy family. Christ is at the center of all that we do in our learning and play. We expect all our children to aspire and aim to achieve the very best that they can and we provide them with an extensive range of opportunities to enable them to achieve their potential. Our ethos is one of a partnership between the school, the family, and the parish.
Within the community of St. Winefride’s children, teachers, parents, priests, and governors live and work together in partnership. We recognize that parents are the children’s first educators and teachers. At St. Winefride’s we endeavor to build on the pattern of learning established at home to ensure that all children entrusted in our care are stimulated to reach their potential. To this end, we warmly encourage all parents to get actively involved in the life of the school and thus be in a better position to support their children during his/her time spent with us.
St Winefride’s is a Voluntary Aided Catholic Primary School, which accepts with gratitude and reverence the children entrusted to our care. We endeavor to create a climate of successful learning and teaching in which every child is stimulated to reach his/her potential and so find joy and fulfillment in the unique contribution he/she is called to make to society. We try to establish in our children an awareness of their true dignity as children of God and lead them towards a deeper knowledge, love, and service of our Creator. We endeavor to know our children personally and to build relationships of mutual trust in which their formation and development at every level are fostered.
We expect high standards of behavior. The school is a caring community where children are learning to live and work together developing tolerance, respect, and politeness to all. Children are encouraged to learn to share and to be kind and understanding of each other’s needs and points of view. This helps to develop self-discipline and promotes a sense of responsibility in each child for its actions. Children at this stage of their development do not always find sharing or controlling anger and aggression easy. Social skills learning is given a high priority throughout the curriculum in the school.
