We ensure that all children leave primary school being able to read, write and count. We have an enrichment map that ensures that children across the school have exciting and important life experiences e.g. going to the seaside/watching chicks hatch. We also have frequent visits from authors, role models in the community, news presenters, and all kinds of animals to ensure that our pupils have many rich experiences.
We follow a ‘topic’ based approach to foundation subjects, often linked to the key text in English. A half-termly topic includes skills development in foundation subjects. We have specialist teachers for art, music, PE, computing, and Spanish to ensure our pupils get the very best teaching in these areas. Our PSHE lessons cover healthy eating, growth mindset, philosophy, and relationships. We follow the Southwark Diocesan scheme of work for RE.
Writing lessons at St George’s are taught using Talk for Writing. The three stages of imitation, innovation, and invention are followed through a unit of work. This approach centers on children learning quality texts off by heart so that rich language and structure are embedded and built upon in every year group. Fiction and non-fiction units are taught every half term. The overview for genres to be taught and texts to be used are on the whole school text map.
The Sounds-Write program we use for phonics is also used in reading to support children with their decoding. We ensure that all children are fluent readers by the time they leave KS1. We use the Reciprocal Reading approach to teach comprehension. In the nursery, children begin to discuss the books they are reading using looking, clue, and thinking questions. This develops throughout the school and we ensure that we teach the skills required for comprehension explicitly. Guided Reading begins in reception and every group reads with an adult.
