Welcome to Risley Avenue Primary School. We are situated in Tottenham in the London Borough of Haringey, close to Bruce Castle Park and Bruce Castle Museum, on The Roundway.

The school lies within the Bruce Castle Conservation Area and is a Local Listed Building of Merit built-in 1913. Located over a large site we have our school garden, which our children enjoy using to grow vegetables and plants. Over the years we have invested in the structure of the school in September 2011 a new school entrance and parents` resource center was created. In September 2012 a dedicated food technology classroom was opened. In 2014 the school gained a dedicated art block and both playgrounds were updated with new climbing frames and table tennis equipment.

The school is a three-form entry Primary School with an Early Years Foundation Stage which comprises two Reception Classes and a Nursery that can facilitate up to 103 part-time places and a 2-year-old provision that can facilitate up to 16 part-time places. We serve a very diverse community and our school population, pupils and staff, reflect our community pupils refer to our school as a “Rainbow School”. Our children speak over 40 different languages and come from a range of cultures, religions, and backgrounds, which we respect and value. It is a happy and stimulating learning environment where every child is encouraged and supported to achieve their very best.

Here at Risley we challenge and support every pupil to achieve their full potential in an atmosphere of respect.

We prepare our children through irresistible learning opportunities to grow into responsible, respectful, independent citizens who are equipped and confident to take their place in the wider world.

Children in this learning community strive every day to make Risley a vibrant, inclusive, safe, and happy school. We aim to be remembered by all who come here as a place where learning is at the heart of living’.

At Risley, we wish to provide, “… pupils with an introduction to the essential knowledge that they need to be educated, citizens…”

We aim to offer a curriculum that is broad and balanced, introducing pupils to a wide range of knowledge, understanding, and skills. By doing so we hope to:

Develop links with the community– "Risley is a community school and we want children to RESPECT and be tolerant of all cultures and faiths. They are also part of a bigger national and international community. We have links with other schools in the UK and the wider world".

Provide children with real experiences – "We use educational visits, visitors to school and our learning environment to engage pupils. We give children opportunities to experience the world around them and ASPIRE to achieve their dreams".

Encourage children to take a lead and develop problem-solving skills – "We want children to be able to think creatively and question. We believe problem-solving is key to their future success and the ability to tackle problems and PERSEVERE in a range of ways will help them to SUCCEED".

We are following the Power of Reading project which is in line with the national curriculum. This is a school development project which enhances children’s pleasure in reading and raises attainment in both reading and writing. The project focuses on using creative teaching approaches when exploring books creating a teaching sequence where children are immersed in the world of the book by using reading aloud, drama, art, music, and dance. This leads to increased enjoyment as a result of their knowledge of and involvement with the book.

In our teaching, we should provide planned opportunities across the curriculum for students to engage in purposeful talk, both formally and informally.

At Risley, the aim of teaching maths is to develop the children’s use of knowledge and skills to solve a range of problems through reasoning, using and applying, and fluency. We teach maths using learning objectives to meet the requirements of the new National Curriculum and the Foundation Stage Early Learning Goals.

In Reception, mathematics is taught following the key objectives that are in line with the Early Learning Goals for problem-solving, reasoning, and numeracy for reasoning & Numeracy in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) published by DFES. KS1 and KS2 teachers use the National Curriculum Programme of Study to teach mathematics.
