School governors are people who want to make a positive contribution to children's education. Governors are one of the largest volunteer forces in the country and have an important part to play in raising school standards through their three key roles of setting strategic direction, ensuring accountability, and monitoring and evaluating school performance. The role of the governing body is key to the effectiveness of a school. Time and time again Ofsted (the national inspection body for schools) has noted that the most effective schools demonstrate effective leadership and management - including by the governing body. There are different types of schools with different categories of governors. Almost anyone over 18 years of age can become a governor. There are no particular qualifications or requirements, other than a willingness to give time to the role and a capacity for working with other people.
At Liberty, we provide a creative curriculum based around the Cornerstones Curriculum, a nationally-recognized approach for delivering outstanding learning opportunities for children. The Cornerstones Curriculum is a creative and thematic approach to learning that is mapped to the 2014 Primary National Curriculum to ensure comprehensive coverage of national expectations. Our new curriculum will be delivered through Imaginative Learning Projects (ILPs)which will provide a rich menu of exciting and motivating learning activities that make creative links between all aspects of our children’s learning.
We believe children learn better when they are encouraged to use their imagination and apply their learning to engaging contexts. Our new curriculum will provide lots of learning challenges throughout the academic year that will require children to solve problems, apply themselves creatively, and express their knowledge and understanding effectively across the curriculum.
Cornerstones also provide a rigorous essential skills framework that outlines the end of year expectations in all subjects. These essential skills are tied to activities and are age-related so that staff can track children’s progress and identify their individual learning needs.
Physical education plays a vital role in children's development and growth. At Liberty Primary School we aim high to provide physical activity throughout the school day. We provide 100% of the children in our school with 2 hours of PE a week and we aim to provide as many opportunities for children to receive an additional 3rd hour as well, through after-hours clubs and lunchtime activities.
In Key Stage One children develop their fundamental movement skills and in Key Stage Two, the children progress towards using these skills within set games, learning the rules and how to play as a team. They will also continue to work on improving their dance routines and movements as well as advancing to using a full range of apparatus during gymnastic lessons.
