We at Leys Primary School will provide a broad and balanced curriculum for our children to acquire the knowledge, practice the skills and develop understanding to thrive in the 21st century and contribute positively to their community and global society.

Assessment for Learning is central to our teaching and learning in every subject & we address the requirements of the National Curriculum (bearing in mind Key Performance Indicators) to ensure challenge & progression.”
In 2014, a new primary Curriculum was introduced, along with a new assessment system that focuses more on what children should know and be able to do at each stage. From September 2014, the government removed ‘level descriptors from the National Curriculum. Schools are expected to establish their assessment systems.
At Leys Primary, we have in place rigorous but sensitive systems for formative (in-process) and summative (termly) assessment which track pupils’ performance and informs next steps in learning. We ensure that each child receives a range of opportunities to reach and exceed standards. We ‘quality assures’ our assessments through regular training, sharing teacher expertise, regular monitoring, and cross Federation, external, and Borough moderation.
SATs tests will reflect an assessment of the new curriculum at the end of the Key Stages (Y2 & 6). Writing will be judged through reported teacher assessment against national frameworks and the reading, grammar spelling, and punctuation, and maths tests will be externally marked with a score on a standardized scale, ranging from 80 to 130. A score of 100 is the expected outcome at the end of Year 6, indicating that children are ready for secondary school. There will be a Phonics Screening Check in Year 1 & 2.Teachers use formative assessment in their classrooms every day. Formative assessment includes sharing targets and criteria with students and giving them feedback while they are working towards those targets. The purpose is to help students understand how to improve.
We love to learn in Nursery and we always try our best. We enjoy learning through play and structured activities. We learn and have fun in a friendly and open environment. We use both the inside and outdoor areas to extend our learning.
Reception is an exciting and enjoyable place to learn. Your child will take part in a range of activities across seven areas of learning. This will allow them to explore new concepts through play, as well as through more structured activities. In Year 1 we look forward to learning lots of new skills through creative and meaningful lessons, encouraging your children to be resilient and independent learners.
Safeguarding children at Leys Primary School is the responsibility of everyone. As such, all members of staff must safeguard and promote the welfare of children. This duty is placed upon the school by Section 175 of the Education Act 2002. Therefore, all staff should know who to go to and how to report any concerns they may have about a child being harmed or at risk of being harmed.
The Designated Safeguarding Lead Practitioner in our school is Mrs. Pamela Gough and in her absence Mr. Grant Krog, (Headteacher). The designated teacher for Looked After Children and the person in charge of CAFs (Common Assessment Framework) Assessments, is our Assistant Headteacher – Mrs. A Rogers. The Governing Body representative for Child Protection is Dame Anna P.L. Hassan.
If we are concerned that a child may be at risk from significant harm (abuse) or is being abused, the school is required to refer their concerns to LBBD Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) and the police, if necessary. In exceptional circumstances, this may happen without the consent or knowledge of parents or carers.
The school also has a responsibility to act upon other concerns that they may have about a child’s welfare in circumstances where there are no suspicions of child abuse. Examples of this may be when a child is demonstrating inappropriate behavior, is involved in bullying, is failing to come to school, or where difficulties at home are affecting the child’s well being is at risk of being drawn into terrorism. This list is by no means exhaustive.
The school will normally seek to discuss any concerns about a pupil with the pupil/pupils’ parents. It will be the Safeguarding Lead or her representative that will make contact with the parent in the event of a concern, suspicion, or disclosure. Our focus is the safety and well-being of the pupil. Therefore, if the school believes that notifying parents could increase the risk to the child or exacerbate the problem, advice will first be sought from MASH and/or the police before parents are contacted.
