The high levels of care, guidance, and support provided for pupils, alongside a clear set of shared values, contribute strongly towards pupils’ exceptional spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development.
Leopold has become highly oversubscribed over the years and in 2013, Brent Local Authority approached us to consider running a temporary bulge provision of two reception classes in the Gwenneth Rickus building on Brentfield Road due to the lack of school places in Brent.
Within that same year, classes were also added in years 1, 2, and 3. The DFE came to visit us in 2014 and was highly impressed with the provision. In January 2016 Leopold Primary School officially became a four-form of entry school on two sites.
Inspiring today’s learners to become tomorrow’s leaders underpins the ethos at Leopold and reflects the beliefs of all pupils, staff, and governors here at our school. Collectively we build the aspirations of our pupils and instill in them the skills and learning experiences to achieve their full potential, whilst exposing them to “wow” experiences to take on their journey through life.
On arriving at Leopold School, you immediately notice the excellent learning behavior of our pupils and the passion, enthusiasm, and dedication of our staff. We believe that the journey that children take to learning is life-long and that Leopold is where this very important journey begins.
We need to promote the drive for excellence in modern British society. We aim to provide children with rich and memorable learning experiences, in an ever-changing world and to foster a love of learning so that our children become successful learners, confident individuals, and responsible citizens. We are very proud of our school, of the pupils, the parents, carers, and grandparents. Because of community commitment and trust in the school, we continue to grow in numbers and strength.
Reception and Year 1 follow the Maths Mastery approach. This is largely focused on problem-solving and aims to teach fewer topics in greater depth to ensure pupils develop a strong understanding of their work.
Maths Mastery functions as a long-term program and is fully in line with the 2014 National Curriculum.
Leopold Primary School adopted this approach in 2016 after recognizing its positive implementation in other schools.
On entering Nursery, children use the first phase of the Letters and Sounds program to develop a basic grounding in phonics and sound skills.
Reception, Year 1 and selected Year 2 pupils are working under the Read, Write, Inc scheme of learning. The program guides children on their reading journey and helps them to establish skills in writing, spelling, and phonetic work.
By the end of Year 1, all children utilizing the Read, Write, Inc framework have progressed into accurate and well-practiced readers.
Leopold Primary School has implemented the Creative Primary Curriculum offered by Cornerstones throughout all year groups and Key Stages. This program of teaching offers a knowledge- and skills-based curriculum with a focus on creativity and a balanced approach to learning.
The importance of laws whether they are those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced. Each class discusses and sets its own rules that are clearly understood by all and seen to be necessary to ensure that every class member can learn in a safe and ordered environment. Our pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves, and the consequences when laws are broken.
Democracy is embedded at the school. Pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard. Pupils also have the opportunity to air their opinions and ideas through our School Council Team and pupil questionnaires. The elections of the School Council members are based solely on pupil votes, reflecting our British electoral system and demonstrating democracy in action.
Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school, we educate and provide boundaries for our pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Our pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safe examples of this can be seen in our e-safety and P.S.H.E. lessons. Whether it is through the choice of challenge of how they record of participation in our numerous extracurricular activities our pupils are given the freedom to make choices.
Respect is one of the core values of our school. Our PSHE curriculum embodies values of mutual respect through many different units of learning. Respect is promoted during our Headteacher and achievers assemblies. Pupils learn that their behaviors affect their rights and those of others and all members of the school community are expected to treat each other with respect.
Our core value of Respect ensures tolerance of those who have different faiths and beliefs. Leopold Primary School enhances pupil's understanding of different faiths and beliefs through religious education studies P.S.H.E. work visits to other schools in different settings to participate in celebrations such as Diwali inviting guest speakers from many different cultural backgrounds. Beliefs, traditions, and customs will be studied in-depth, with visitors being invited into our school to enrich and extend understanding. Through this, our pupils gain an enhanced understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society.
