Leith Primary is an amazing and historic building right on the edge of Leith Links. The school truly reflects its catchment area. We are proud of the diversity of the children and families we serve. We are proud of the quality of education we provide for all children. We have an excellent record of providing care, support, and challenge for all pupils. The origins of the school go back to the 15th century. The present site has been the location of the school since 1806. The present building, opened in 1898, is the second to stand on this site and originally provided education for children up to 14.
Leith Primary School is very much part of the local landscape. Topped proudly as it is by a ship, a reminder of Leith’s maritime past, it is a well-recognized landmark. We are very fortunate to have access to an area of Leith Links just in front of the school. In 1998 the school celebrated our Centenary with several special events.
Inside there are tall staircases, long corridors, and high ceilings where many of the original Victorian features are still in evidence. Although the fabric of the building is over 100 years old, the classrooms are large and light.
In 2014 the School gym hall and Nursery in the Duncan Place Annex were closed. The new Gym Hall and Nursery will be opened at the end of January 2018.

Taking care of our children’s well-being and making sure they are alright – even before they are born – helps us ensure the most positive outcomes for them later in life. It gives them the potential to grow up ready to succeed and play their part in society. Our school adopts the Getting it right for every child in Edinburgh approach to give the right help to children, young people, and families when they need it from a joined-up multi-agency team.
Getting it right for every child is the foundation for work with all children and young people, including adult services where parents are involved. It builds on universal health and education services and is embedded in the developing early years and youth frameworks. Developments in the universal services of health and education, such as Better Health Better Care and Curriculum for Excellence, are identifying what needs to be done in those particular areas to improve outcomes for children.
We place a high priority on the well-being and safety of our pupils. To this end, we have in place a personal safety program to give pupils knowledge and life skills to keep them safe from all forms of abuse. Where we have concerns that a child about the possible abuse of pupils we are required to follow the Edinburgh and the Lothian’s Inter-Agency Child Protection Procedures which set out the specific duties and responsibilities towards the child and their parents/carers.
