Haggerston School is a high achieving, thriving school which prides itself on academic rigor and high expectations for every child. Fostering students’ creativity and character are at the core of our school culture with a strong emphasis on Arts education and sport alongside a broad, academic curriculum. Our examination results are excellent but our students leave with more than a set of qualifications we teach students to become articulate, strong, and confident individuals. We teach them to value knowledge and education and to understand how to use it to better themselves, their community, and society as a whole.
We are fortunate to have excellent facilities and teaching spaces in a beautiful Grade II listed building designed originally by Erno Goldfinger, of which our drama, art, sports, and technology spaces are exceptional. We are also fortunate to enjoy many benefits of being so close to the center of London, including partnerships with large and small businesses and with London’s universities.
As a Community School within Hackney, both our primary-to-secondary admissions and in-year admissions are arranged through the Hackney Learning Trust (HLT). If you have recently moved to Hackney you should take with you proof of your child’s date of birth and proof of residence (for example, a recent utility bill).
What makes Haggerston unique? Two aspects stand out: our standards in the creative arts are simply outstanding, and these subjects are crucial to our curriculum, and to the stimulation and nurturing of young people’s creative thinking skills – which they need as individuals, and we need as a society – and our inclusive practice means that all students learn very well and make excellent progress no matter what their starting points.
Haggerston School Library is located at the heart of the school and is much loved by students and staff. A dedicated team of student volunteers gives their time to assist the librarian, Dr. Parris, in the day-to-day running of book loans and regular activities. It is a thriving space where students from all years can get the support they need whether they are looking for an unputdownable novel, help with homework, or expand their knowledge beyond the curriculum. Promoting literacy and reading for pleasure are key objectives for Haggerston School, and our library plays an important role by inspiring curiosity and a love of books.
The library supports students through timetabled Library lessons, and all new students receive a prepared library induction. Students are allowed to borrow up to two books for two weeks at a time. The stock is updated regularly to support students from year seven through to sixth form. Students and staff are encouraged to share recommendations and offer suggestions for new purchases.
Haggerston School takes very seriously its duty towards all its pupils who have been entrusted to its care and seeks to provide a school environment where all children are safe, secure, valued, respected, and listened to. Haggerston School believes that it is always unacceptable for a child or young person to experience abuse of any kind and recognizes its responsibility to safeguard the welfare of all children and young people, by a commitment to practice that protects them.
Haggerston Sixth Form is a vibrant community of talented and ambitious young people. Our focus is on academic excellence and developing leaders of the future. We are a small sixth form, able to offer reduced class sizes and high levels of individual support which enables students to make excellent progress and grow into independent, confident adults. We offer a range of subjects that support progression to University or high-quality apprenticeships. It is our mission to ensure that our students can go on to lead successful, fulfilling lives. Currently, 80% of our students progress onto University, a figure which is well above national average progression rates. We believe this is due to the wide range of support, opportunity, and experience students have access to here.
Situated in a Grade II listed, historic building, sixth formers at Haggerston benefit from fantastic, state-of-the-art facilities. For example, we have professional-standard drama studios, high-quality sports, technology, and art spaces. We also have a supervised study support area and common room. Our careers officer guides students when applying for university and all our Year 12 students complete work experience to help them develop the skills they will need in the workplace. Finally, our students benefit from a rich variety of enrichment experiences, from educational and cultural visits to links with our business partners in the City. Our students feel part of a tight-knit community, where they can develop their talents and flourish into confident and successful young adults.
