We aim to provide a worthwhile program of lessons and activities which will alleviate literacy and numeracy difficulties. The promotion of enquiring minds and an eagerness to be involved in the world around them ensures that all our pupils are allowed to develop successful learning strategies. Acquiring essential skills to last for a lifetime is what an education at Brown’s is about. To succeed in this important task we have a close working partnership between child and teacher.
Brown’s is a lively and purposeful School. Every child is encouraged to become involved in a wide range of activities and to respect the achievement of others. All pupils are allowed to undertake different duties. It is hoped that they will be able to gain from these experiences and thereby act responsibly towards each other, their family, and their neighbors. We encourage visits to local shops, banks and libraries.
The pupils have had great success participating in an adventure program called Challenger Troop this can also lead to a BTEC qualification. They look forward to horse riding at a local stable and they also enjoy access to the indoor swimming and sports facilities at the Walnuts Leisure Centre, Orpington. Our Careers Officer has arranged college placements for our pupils and we have had great success here. Qualifications have been achieved eg. Diploma in Fisheries at Hadlow College. Our pupils have had work experience placements in the local community eg. Mechanics Garage on Bromley Common.
Brown’s pupils carry out regular fundraising activities. Recent donations have been made to charities such as Demelza House, Cancer Research, The Ebola Crisis, and The Dyspraxia Foundation. Pupils are also involved in making cakes for a local Homeless charity.
The pupil's voice is heard through the School Council. Regular meetings to discuss pupils’ very worthwhile ideas and suggestions for our community, ensure that their voice is heard and responded to.
The School rules are clear and sensible and relate to both staff and pupils. We expect the highest standards of courtesy and behavior within our School and try to give our best throughout the working day. Our lives together need to be based upon mutual trust, respect for each other’s dignity, individuality, religious belief, and ethnic diversity. We recognize our inter-dependence as members of a world community and our responsibility to care for our environment.
Pupils with SLCN may have difficulty in understanding and/or making others understand information conveyed through spoken language. Their acquisition of speech and their oral language skills may be significantly behind their peers. Their speech may be poor or unintelligible.
Brown’s School’s rapid referral process delivers an efficient and supportive service to local authorities, parents, and other professionals to ensure that children are placed in a service that is right for their needs. Our key priority is to work in partnership with local authorities, parents, mainstream schools, colleges, and other organizations to ensure that all receive an efficient referral process. We commit to delivering a rapid referral process that includes:
- Contact as soon as possible once the paperwork is received
- Progressing with a rapid decision on acceptance of our school
- Making suitable arrangements for the young person to visit the school, with a view to the placement starting on an agreed date
We have specific admission criteria relevant to the service and support that we offer. If we are unable to meet the young person’s needs, we will provide you with alternative options to secure a suitable placement.

If parents want their son or daughter to be enrolled then this will be followed by an informal interview and assessment of their child. Once an offer of a place is made then parents will be asked to complete and return the Entrance Form.
The classes are small with staff to pupil ratio of 1:4. Each child’s education plan is carefully set out to ensure essential learning strategies are acquired and understood. Audio-visual equipment and computers complement a wide range of classroom resources, to enable multi-sensory teaching techniques to be deployed.
Brown’s is an independent day school for boys and girls, aged from 6 to 16 years. We specialize in educating children of all ability ranges, who have specific learning difficulties. Children who are unable to achieve within the conventional classroom can regain their self-esteem and realize their full potential when inspired by an experienced, qualified, and dedicated staff team. Small group tuition, within a stimulating environment, is the key to promoting knowledge and understanding.
