It was with great excitement and enthusiasm that we opened the doors to our first pupils at Abacus Belsize Primary School this past September 2013. As a team, we are committed to building a school that is the local school of choice for Belsize Park residents and the surrounding area. We are dedicated to delivering an exciting and enriching curriculum to all of our pupils.

Abacus Belsize Primary School is a new Primary School that opened in September 2013 under the Free Schools Programme to help meet the local need for school places. A member of the CfBT Schools Trust family of schools, we are secular and welcome children from all backgrounds.

Our mission is to foster a positive, creative and multi-sensory learning environment that inspires each child to maximize their talents, curiosity, and ability to think.

Our motto is “I see, I hear, I do and I learn.” We believe all children are entitled to enjoy their childhood and live it actively. Our aim at Abacus is to make a positive contribution to the development of children as individuals and as members of the community. We want to give children a sense of who they are and where they belong in the world. This involves encouraging respect for other people’s viewpoints.

Our curriculum is rich, ambitious, and personalized to the needs of each child. Based on the National Curriculum, we will begin with a strong core of English and Mathematics and enrich the children’s day with local outdoor sessions to extend their learning beyond the classroom. We will also introduce Mandarin from Reception upwards. Children will gain early experience of a foreign language and culture, through songs, rhyme, and dance.

We are a small, inclusive school, serving a socially diverse community. Built by the community, and for the community, we welcome parents, carers, and community members and encourage them to take an active part in our children’s education. We consider communication with parents and carers vital and will keep them updated regularly on their child’s progress and how they can support their learning, through weekly newsletters and daily book diaries. Teaching staff will be available for a brief word at the end of each day to address any minor concerns at an early stage.

At Abacus we believe children learn differently but that they all deserve the right to:

    • Aspire to achieve the best they can, academically
    • Believe in themselves, being balanced and broad-minded
    • Considerate, confident, tolerant, and independent children
    • Develop a life-long love of learning
    • Enjoy their childhood!
    • Be a fearless reader
    • Be an adventurous outdoor learner
    • Be adept at a second language
    • Thrive!
