In 1980, the Chief Education Officer in Malacca approached Mr. A. G. Leon, a renowned educationist who had just retired from Government service, to start a school for the children of the expatriate community. At that time there was a lot of foreign investment in Malacca but no appropriate school for the English-speaking community. The Education Department allowed Mr. Leon to use the top floor of an old government school in Bukit Cina, rent-free and even provided desks and chairs. The Malacca Expatriate School was born, very humbly, on 9th June 1980 with one Head, one teacher, and fewer than 10 students.
As numbers increased over the years, more teachers were employed and after almost 16 years at the Bukit Cina Primary School, MES decided to move to ‘newer’ premises at Tanjong Kling. We have since been growing from strength to strength and on 23 February 2011 MES was awarded membership of Cambridge Primary, an international education program, by the University of Cambridge International Examinations.
On 20th October 2011 MES was officially given Government approval to set up a secondary school to provide quality international education to the expatriate and local community of Malacca. This was established at 5313-C, Taman Tay Boon Seng, Klebang Besar, in October 2011.
The school acquired accreditation from Cambridge International Examinations and is now an examining center for Cambridge Checkpoint Assessments at Year 6 and Year 9 and for IGCSEs at Year 11.
The school has been richly blessed with dedicated teachers, both past and present, who have always gone the extra mile. Our support staff has been excellent. It has indeed been a long and enriching journey of more than 34 years and we look forward to many more years of providing educational excellence to our students.
Malacca Expatriate School is a co-educational, international school. Established in 1980, MES provides a British International Curriculum to the expatriate and the local community in Melaka, Malaysia. The academic year runs from the beginning of September until the end of July.
MES is a Cambridge International Examinations Centre and follows the Cambridge curriculum at both primary and secondary levels. Each student’s performance is assessed by end-of-term tests internally and by Cambridge Checkpoint Assessment at the end of Year 6 and the end of Year 9 as external assessment. In Year 10, students begin a two-year course of study leading to the International General Certificate of Secondary Examination (IGCSE) assessment at the end of Year 11.
Students who obtain IGCSE qualifications are well prepared for further academic studies in Malaysia or internationally. They may progress to study AS and A Level or the International Baccalaureate Diploma leading to higher education at university. They are also equipped with the skills needed for immediate employment.
