SIS is home to students who represent over 25 nationalities. The students experience a vibrant international mindset every day and show appreciation for other cultures. Our support for each individual, and our learning culture, makes it easy for students coming in from, or going out to other educational systems.
Through the development of our school’s Core Learning Outcomes (CLOs) and the IB Learner Profile, students demonstrate international-mindedness: an open, respectful attitude to others’ ideas, cultures, and opinions.
Student expression and creativity are written all over the walls at SIS – literally. From the murals that grace the hallways to the music and drama performances showcased at our school, the school’s Fine Arts Department in the elementary and secondary school provides endless opportunities for student expression and creativity.
Nestled in the heart of Citraland, SIS boasts a spacious, inviting, and diverse learning space. Our purpose-built facility features three science laboratories, a computer lab, large classrooms, a spacious gymnasium and Olympic-sized pool, two art rooms, a ceramics room, and plenty of green space. Our canteen not only provides a space for camaraderie before and after school, and during the lunch hour, but outside vendors provide nutritious and delicious food during the morning break, at lunch, and after school. The Little Theater hosts monthly ES assemblies as well as provides a learning space for our MS and HS drama programs. Finally, our library is home to more than 30,000 titles and serves as the hub of our school. Please see the photo gallery for a virtual walk through our campus.
SIS is committed to providing a safe, caring, and engaging environment suited to the needs of all students. We promote respect for all things and people. We strive to nurture students’ social and emotional development along with their intellectual growth.
At SIS, learning is not just confined to the classroom. Learning excursions in and around Surabaya, our Secondary School’s annual Week Without Walls, as well as student-initiated service projects provide endless learning opportunities. Serving our local and global community is important to the students and staff at SIS. As such, our school is actively involved in supporting initiatives such as Habitat for Humanity, and Cleft Care. In addition, our middle school and high school students have opportunities to work with children from local orphanages through outreach programs coordinated by various extra-curricular organizations at SIS.
SIS is unique among all of the choices for the following reasons: we have the most qualified international and local staff with the highest ratio of ex-pat to Indonesian teachers in Surabaya, we are the only school that is accredited by a Western accrediting body (Western Association of Schools and Colleges), and we offer the most diverse student body in Surabaya.
The majority of our student body wants to continue their university education outside of Indonesia. If you fall into this category, then SIS is the obvious choice for your child. SIS was started by the U.S. Consulate in 1971 and has more experience than any other school in Surabaya preparing students to be successful in universities around the world. To be successful in universities, knowledge of English is not enough. Students at SIS are exposed to a rigorous curriculum using U.S. standards. We follow the IB PYP model in elementary school and an American middle school and high school model in secondary. Our classes culminate with Advanced Placement (AP) courses offered by the College Board which gives students exposure to introductory university classes while still in high school.
A curriculum is only as strong as its teachers. Our teaching staff is where SIS outshines every other school in Surabaya. SIS hires the finest international teachers from around the world to work closely with the finest Indonesian staff. All of our core classes from Kindergarten to Grade 12 are taught by ex-pat teachers with experience in their home country, as well as other excellent international schools around the world. The majority of our staff hold advanced degrees.
