Stratford Hall was founded in the late 1990s by two Burnaby parents, Elaine Lee and Cindy Leung, who wanted a university preparatory option for their own children. The school opened in 2000 with only 40 students, Kindergarten to Grade 12. Since then, we have added about 40 new students each year, making our current enrollment is 530 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. In 2003, Stratford gained authorization for the IB Primary Years Programme the first school in Western Canada to do so. That same year, Stratford Hall was accepted into the Independent Schools Association of BC, and later into the Canadian Association of Independent Schools in 2005.
In 2005, we achieved authorization for the IB Diploma Programme, ensuring that our first graduating class would be Diploma candidates. Four years later, Stratford attained full authorization for our Middle Years Programme. We are now one of five schools in the lower mainland, one of 12 in Canada, and one of 185 in the world to offer the IB Continuum Programme.
Stratford Hall educates students to the highest global standards through the programs of the International Baccalaureate. Excellence and confidence are developed through a challenging academic curriculum with further emphasis on creativity, action, and service. We foster a strong pluralistic community built on integrity and respect.
Stratford Hall strives to be a global leader in the International Baccalaureate community. Our students will gain a deep understanding of the world around them, and they will act on their connections to the outside community. They will excel to the best of their abilities, and graduates will be equipped to achieve their chosen goals. This is accomplished by acquiring and retaining the best teachers, and by a commitment to a balanced and enriched curriculum. The success of Stratford Hall is deeply rooted in the establishment of a supportive, knowledgeable, and committed community.
At Stratford Hall, you will hear us speak about the school community on your first visit to the school (even if it is a virtual visit!). The word community is prominent in our vernacular as a result of the strong partnership that exists between our faculty and staff and our families. We are committed to ensuring that Stratford Hall students not only receive a great education but that their school experience will change their lives. It is this strong sense of community, attention to learning, and caring that draws people to Stratford Hall.
Our holistic curriculum is designed to develop our students’ curiosity, character, and perspective — attributes that will serve them throughout their lifetime. Our team of teachers and support staff nurtures the development of thoughtful, knowledgeable, courageous young people, who are inspired to make a difference in their world.
