Our goal is to inspire your son, encourage him to dream, take control of his life, and create his bright future. At the core of our curriculum is BBC's Teaching and Learning framework - Dimensions of Learning (DOL). The framework is based on what researchers know about how students learn and combine teacher-directed and student-directed learning. Having one overarching framework creates cohesion in a large school and enables students to make connections across subject disciplines. It also:

    • Provides a resource for teaching and learning strategies.
    • Sets a framework for planning professional learning for staff.
    • Gives students and teachers a common language for talking about learning and teaching.
    • Teaches students thinking skills they can apply themselves hence develop independence.

The DOL framework comprises five dimensions: Attitudes and Perceptions, Acquire and Integrate Knowledge, Extend and Refine Knowledge, Use Knowledge Meaningfully, and Habits of Mind. At Brisbane Boys' College, there is always a Next Generation. This is never truer than for technology. Today, more than ever, we need to move our thinking beyond traditional literacy to a more dynamic set of 21st-century fluencies. These skills are needed to live and succeed in this rapidly changing society. These skills are not just about technological prowess. They are not about hardware but more about headware!

We promote 21st-century fluencies and encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and innovation. Staying ahead of the curve is vital; that is why we advocate 1-1 learning using Tablet PCs. This keeps us in-step with the ever-evolving world of technology, transforming today's students into skilled professionals, successful business people, and leaders of tomorrow.

Knowledge-based learning is no longer enough. We need to teach children how to think. Not only to solve problems but to recognize them in the first place. We know boys. We know how to harness their energy, curiosity, and thirst for competition. We call this A New School of Thought.

Designed to stimulate and challenge inquiring young minds, the BBC's Junior School program caters to young boys' unique learning styles, combining structured and play-based learning experiences. We look beyond traditional foundation skills such as literacy and numeracy, with boys extended in these areas through competitions in debating, public speaking, and mathematics.

At the BBC, our focus lies in developing the whole boy and preparing him for future learning and the changing world. Specialists, including Visual Art, Christian Education, Music (choral and ensemble), Technology, and Physical Education, are integrated into our core academic curriculum. Exposure to experiential learning builds and activates resilience, problem-solving, independence, social aptitude, and mindfulness. The synergy between childhood development and a boy's ability to learn, absorb, and apply knowledge is reflected in our approach. Our understanding of key developmental milestones informs teaching strategies and enables us to deliver tailored learning experiences for your son.

Designed to stimulate and challenge inquiring young minds, the Junior School program at the BBC caters to young boys' unique learning styles. A combination of creative and structured learning experiences allows each student from Prep to Year 6 to explore their particular interests and individual talents while acquiring a strong foundation for future learning. Purpose-built facilities provide an exceptional learning environment, and all boys are extended and supported at each stage of their development to ensure they experience personal success.

The flexible and diverse curriculum encourages students to become active learners, complex thinkers, and effective communicators. At BBC, we believe success starts early, and this sits at the core of our philosophy and vision for Junior School students. The early year's program provides a wide range of educational experiences designed to support boys' academic and personal development. Priority is given to literacy and numeracy, both reinforced and strengthened by exploring core subject areas, including Science, History, and Geography. Specialist lessons in Art, Christian Education, Music, Technology, and Physical Education enable boys to discover individual talents and interests. The curriculum is designed to build a successful foundation for future learning and focus intensely on developing fine motor skills, phonological awareness, and mental habits.

In Years 4, 5, and 6, boys are encouraged to evaluate the world in which they live, build on talents discovered during their early years, and continue to develop their knowledge in key learning areas. The diverse program is designed to promote higher-level thinking skills and independent learning.

Quality teaching in early childhood is paramount to quality outcomes. Our boys start their formal reading and writing journey from the first weeks of Prep. We follow an evidence-based approach to literacy, which incorporates a love of literature with a highly-structured, synthetic phonics approach to reading and writing. Boys love this.

Our approach means our teachers follow a consistent method to scaffold boys' understanding of decoding text and then apply the skills they have learned to comprehend and write. Boys are regularly assessed and placed in focussed groups to support and extend so that they keep up and shine, not catch up. Their success breeds success.
