Job Description

The AWS Core Networking Organization is looking for a Software Development Engineer to join our Backbone Enterprise, and Regional Engineering (BERE) team. In this role you will work hand-in-hand with System Development teams, Frontend Engineering teams, and Network Engineering teams to drive stability, consistency, and sustainability of the network while never losing sight of the high security bar our customer’s demand. You’ll apply your large-scale understanding of computing solutions to write code and manage services that delight our customers.

AWS Global Connectivity and Network Availability (GCNA) is the backbone that connects the global AWS network. Focused on controlling the internet traffic that allows users to access their information and applications regardless of where they are in the world. Key job responsibilities
Engineers will build software that will allow AWS to understand, build and improve the reliability of the physical AWS network. Our customers need this geospatial data to visualize a network that crosses the entire plant, identify where in the real-world availability risk lies and to plan exponential network growth.

A day in the life
Engineers in the BERE organization have a wide range of responsibilities: we work with internal partners to develop and implement the next gen platforms along with the tooling ecosystems to support with these platforms driving efficiency and scalability through the automation of builds, configuration deployment, and the scaling of capacity. As our network is one of the largest in the world, there is no blue print at our scale allowing our engineers to develop solutions to the complex challenges that we face daily. We encourage durable solutions that look around corners while taking into consideration our customer needs from a cost, performance, and reliability perspective. Our team develops tooling that provides the required visibility and control of traffic across the network, while prioritizing the automatic mitigation of events to minimize the impact to our customers during events.
- Work in a 24x7 team on call rotation, with ability to drive into workplace for critical events/needs.
- Manage problem resolution, operate efficiently under pressure, and investigate root cause once impact has been mitigated.


About the team
Within AWS Networking, the Backbone Enterprise, and Regional Engineering (BERE) organization is responsible for the design, implementation, and operations of a wide array of networking infrastructure that provide global connectivity between all AWS Regions and edge locations.

BERE organization provides the massive scale required to support our AWS customers and internal services, via a network that grows by 70% annually. In addition, they have teams that are responsible for the design and operation of our global corporate office and data center network, allowing tens of thousands of Amazonians to perform their daily tasks in support of our customers.

Basic Qualifications:

- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language

Preferred Qualifications:

- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $115,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $223,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
