Commodities Markets is a national competency based service within FAAS that provides audit and advisory services to companies with commodity operations and exposure. The practice is comprised of dedicated client service audit and advisory teams with deep industry knowledge, technical competency and relevant project experience.  Relevant services provided by the

 

Commodities Markets team include: assisting clients with key organizational issues, such as governance, people, process and technology. Specifically, we may help commodity traders / hedgers conduct a comprehensive organizational gap analysis based upon leading industry practices and develop detailed implementation blueprints to enhance business capabilities and operational effectiveness. We generally serve clients located in North America but may on a strategic basis serve international clients as well 

 

The opportunity

Ernst & Young's Financial Accounting Advisory Services (FAAS), currently has an exciting career opportunity for a Senior Consultant within its Commodities Markets advisory team. The Senior Consultant will participate mainly on advisory projects and should expect to serve as a commodities subject matter specialist, on an as-needed basis, for trading audit engagement support.

 

With working knowledge of energy trading operations and related matters, the Senior Consultant is a vital member of the engagement team. The Senior Consultant will be expected to play an "advisor" role, meaning that he/she will be provided the opportunity to work in a number of different areas – such as, cross commodity integration, evaluation of business process effectiveness across the front-, middle- and back-offices, regulatory reform and/or, audit execution/approach procedures.

 

Consideration is given to each Senior Consultant's educational background and experience in determining the appropriate assignments, however, a Senior Consultant is expected to have good foundational knowledge of commodity markets, instruments / products, upcoming regulatory changes / pronouncements and key commodity operating functions across the transaction lifecycle. 

 

Your key responsibilities

  • Participate in client engagements to document business processes and generate presentations highlighting business process strengths, gaps and areas for improvement across the commodity trading value chain for clients with supply, marketing and trading operations.
  • Understand commodity transaction types (physical and financial) across multiple markets – includes understanding and explaining rationale for hedging strategies and short- / long-term business objectives of the client.
  • Understand the implication of commodity risks and/or hedging strategies for various commodity instruments and markets, which may include control and process design, re-design and/or mitigation related activities.
  • Participate in cross functional discussions with client business units to determine and document functional requirements for potential trading application upgrades and/or implementations. 
  • Maintain a strong client focus by being responsive to client requests and developing/maintaining productive working relationships with client personnel.
  • Stay informed of current business, economic and regulatory developments relevant to our clients.
  • Assist with the development of training materials and/or thought leadership assets for both internal and external use.
  • Provide supervision and mentoring to engagement staff.
  • Assist in engagement administration, including maintaining files, managing timelines, and reporting hours and expenses for budgeting purposes.
  • Assist with campus and experienced recruiting efforts
  • Collaborate with team members to set individual and team goals and responsibilities.
  • Contribute ideas and opinions to the engagement and practice team and proactively listen and seek out team members' ideas and views.
  • Utilize technology to continually learn, share knowledge with team members, and enhance service delivery.
  • Seek out opportunities to present Ernst & Young's services suite to clients – includes participating in sales opportunities.

 

To qualify for the role you must have

  • A bachelor's degree and approximately 2 - 4 years of related work experience; or a graduate degree and approximately 2 years of related work experience
  • A degree in accounting, finance, economics, mathematics, information technology or a related field is desired
  • Relevant work experience, which could include industry experience gained as a risk, back-office or technology professional
  • Experience working on a commodity trading audit and/or  providing advisory services pertaining to commodity trading / hedging operations
  • Functional and/or technical experience working with and/or implementing an Energy Trading Risk Management application (i.e., OpenLink, Sungard, Triple Point or Allegro)
  • Working knowledge of how commodity markets operate (i.e., power, gas, crude, metals and/or refined products)
  • The ability and willingness to travel and work in excess of standard hours when necessary
  • Access to reliable transportation to/from the EY office and client sites. A driver's license is strongly recommended as ride share and public transportation options may not be available in all locations

 

Ideally, you'll also have

  • Ability to effectively lead others and take ownership of deliverables
  • Strong analytical and technical skills
  • Strong communication, presentation, client service and technical writing skills
  • Desire and ability to work closely with engagement team members and clients
  • Certification or other relevant certification (preferred but not required)

What we offer
 
We offer a comprehensive compensation and benefits package where you’ll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to the business.  The salary range for this job in most geographic locations in the US is $92,600 to $169,700. The salary range for New York City Metro Area, Washington State and California (excluding Sacramento) is $111,100 to $192,900.  Individual salaries within those ranges are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills and geography.  In addition, our Total Rewards package includes medical and dental coverage, pension and 401(k) plans, and a wide range of paid time off options. Under our flexible vacation policy, you’ll decide how much vacation time you need based on your own personal circumstances. You’ll also be granted time off for designated EY Paid Holidays, Winter/Summer breaks, Personal/Family Care, and other leaves of absence when needed to support your physical, financial, and emotional well-being.
