Job Description Summary

The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for all functions associated with all ultrasound exams in imaging's scope of service. Candidate will be knowledgeable in anatomical positioning and physiology and must be able to perform high quality ultrasound examination for interpretation by a physician on children, adolescents, and adults.
Required Minimum Training and Education: Graduation from an accredited school of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Certification by the American Registry if Radiologic Technologists and/or American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or registry eligible required. Must be ARDMS registered within 1 year of hire. One year experience in performing ultrasound diagnostic procedures preferred. Must be self-motivated with the ability to work independently and efficiently. Must have the ability to learn and use new processes, tools, and equipment as required.

Job Description

Support Culture of Safety 

  • Consistently looks for improvements by analyzing workflows, and work areas and identifying wasteful practices.
  • Address problems of patient care as they arise and make decisions to appropriately resolve the problem, involve the appropriate supervisor or another member of the patient's care team as necessary.
  • Ask Why? See something say something- use the Shield reporting system.
  • Actively participate in group meetings, by offering your comment, suggestions, etc.
  •  Read and respond to emails and other communication in a timely manner.

Perform examinations in a timely and accurate manner for the interpreting physicians.

  • Timely- The schedule does not fall behind, and exam delays are communicated to all stakeholders.
  • The exam is routed to PACS or Xcelera for interpretation as soon as possible. Prepare preliminary reports and contacts referring physicians, according to established procedures when required.
  •  Assure that exams are finalized in EPIC and contact the interpreting physician if needed.
  • Accurately- Evaluate the schedule in advance to review the patient's medical history and exam order. Communicate with referring clinician and reading physician to adapt the examination if necessary.
  •  Assure that all STAT/call reports and ASAP exams are communicated to the appropriate care team members and physicians.

Assure exam rooms and adjacent clinical areas are prepared to receive patients/visitors and perform examinations. 

  • Equipment- assure all needed equipment is available and in working order. Report any equipment errors or downtime to the service vendor and supervisor ASAP.
  • Exam room and common areas- Ensure all needed medical supplies are ordered and stowed, ensure exam room and patient areas are clean and equipment is cleaned per manufacturer, OSHA, DHEC, and infection control guidelines.
  • Report any environmental issues timely to the supervisor.

Additional Job Description

Required Minimum Training and Education: Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.  Specialties preferred are abdominal, OB/GYN and Breast.  Must be self motivated with the ability to work independently and efficiently. Must have the ability to learn and use new processes, tools and equipment as required. Must have at least two years of independent work experience.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Registry by The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Preferred Specialties; Breast, OB/GYN, and Abdomen. Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education requirements for Specialty (ies) as appropriate. Current BLS certification.

Physical Requirements: Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking, and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required.  Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors.  Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36” to overhead 25 lbs.   Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
