Job Description:

Position Title: Aboriginal Health Worker
Employment Type: 2 x Maximum Term until June 2026 Full-time
Hours per week: 38
Position Grade: Aboriginal Health Education officer (Non-Grad/Grad)
Salary: $60,373 - $110,326.00

About the role:
The Aboriginal Health Worker will work within the Alcohol Drug Service and provide culturally sensitive care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people accessing St Vincent's Hospital inpatient and outpatient Alcohol and Drug services. The position will work closely with patients/clients, their families and liaise with other health care professionals within SVHS as well as external agencies to contribute to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people accessing Alcohol and Drug Service support.

Selection Criteria:

1.Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent’s Health Australia.

2.Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background. An applicant’s race is a genuine occupation qualification and is authorised by Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW). Confirmation of Aboriginality will be required.

3.Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and of the health and welfare needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

4. Proven ability and experience in engaging with and advocating for Aboriginal people and communities in a health care setting,

5.Well-developed written and verbal communication skills – including advocacy, liaison (internal and external) and negotiation along with computer skills.

6.Demonstrated understanding of issues for people with drug and alcohol problems along with an understanding of harm reduction principles

7.Ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team in a high demand environment with competing demands

8.Current unrestricted NSW Driver’s License with the ability to travel in accordance with position responsibilities
