About the Role
This is a senior genetic counselling role within St Vincent’s Health, which in addition to a clinical load, also entails significant contribution to the establishment and development of a new genetic counselling service at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. Clinical work will focus cardiac genetics initially, with a view to expand services to other areas as needs arise. As this is a new role, the successful applicant will need to be a self-starter, possess strong leadership skills and be able to work autonomously.
Duties include:
Working closely with medical staff, establish, manage and lead an effective and patient-centred genetic counselling service that serves the needs of St Vincent’s Hospital patients, with an initial focus on cardiac genetic patients
Conduct patient consultations, including thorough clinic preparation, follow up of results and clinic letters
Facilitate mainstreaming of genetic and genomic testing for medical specialists
Assist in knowledge sharing and upskilling about genetic testing and genetic counselling by participating in Hospital seminars and providing education for medical nursing and allied health staff.
Participation in counselling supervision
Select appropriate genetic testing laboratories for the St Vincent’s genetics service based on quality, cost and turn around time
Exercise initiative and offer suggestions for improving/creating processes
Involve others in the identification of change initiatives and the implementation of processes
Contribute to research as required
Participate in activities related to service development
The classification range for this position is Genetic Counsellor Grade 3 WW9 - WW12 ($103,298 - $118,055 per annum, pro rata for part time).
Your Contribution
Master of Genetic Counselling from a HGSA recognised program
Certification in Genetic Counselling that meets requirements of Human Genetics Society of Australasia
Active participation in continuing professional development (CPD) to meet requirements of registration in HGSA register of Genetic Counsellors
At least 2 years’ experience post certification
Knowledge and understanding of genetic counselling, including medical, genetic and psychosocial aspects
Experience in adult genetics, particularly cardiac genetics and variant classification would be an advantage
Experience in genetic service development initiatives
Experience working as a Genetic Counsellor and as part of a multidisciplinary team
Current National criminal history check, or willing to obtain
