Job Description Summary

MUSC’s Department of Neurosurgery is hiring a Research Specialist III for the coordination of a Brain Tumor Immunology Laboratory, a three-year project funded by the Medical University of South Carolina Department of Neurosurgery. A Research Specialist III position at the Hollings Cancer Center (NCI-designated cancer center) of the Medical University of South Carolina is available in the newly forming Strickland Laboratory. Our primary aim is to understand the role of tumor heterogeneity and the tumor immune microenvironment as it permits immune tolerance in brain tumors. Our goal is to translate basic cancer immunology into targeted clinical immunotherapies. We are particularly interested in glioblastoma and aggressive subtypes of meningioma. We focus on the interplay of immune cell proportions and communications within the tumor immune microenvironment as it correlates with tumor progression.

The successful candidate must be highly organized and provide research expertise. The candidate will be responsible for assisting in the conduct of research studies with a focus on brain tumor immunology. Specifically, the candidate will be responsible for assisting with experiments and data collection. The candidate will work closely with research investigators and research staff. This includes the ability to understand and be able be capable with basic laboratory experimentation in the field of tumor genetics and immunology including but not limited to immunohistochemistry, next generation sequencing modalities, and single cell transcriptomics.

Job Description

This position will work under direct supervision of the Brain Tumor Laboratory PI, which will require numerous meetings on weekly and ad hoc bases. The Research Specialist III will primarily work in MUSC’s Hollings Cancer Center, with an expectation to attend meetings and other project-related activities as necessary.

Job Duties:

30%: Manage and oversee basic science lab events from inception through completion to ensure IRB and regulatory compliance. Coordinate human tissue collection and distribution among several laboratories involved in interdisciplinary research projects with MUSC.

30%: Assist with experimental data collections involving brain tumor procedures. Collects samples, performs sample analyses, and extracts measurement data from experiments.

30% Design and assist in the design of experimental research protocols to assist investigators in their research studies.

5%: Obtains consents from patients at the MUSC clinic and hospital patients.

5%: Other duties as assigned.

Additional Job Description

Minimum Requirements: A bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science directly related to the assigned area of research and two years advanced journel-level work experience in a clinical or research setting.
