Job Description Summary

Job Summary/ Purpose: The successful applicant will be an Advanced Practice Provider interested in working full-time in the care of patients in a primary care setting. The Family Medicine APP is a valued member of the care team, and their primary responsibility is the management of patients within the downtown Charleston area. The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will work with physicians and care team members to assist in direct patient care, case management, practice development, and implementation of policies and procedures focused on patient-centered care. 10% of time (the
equivalent of 4 hours) will be devoted to professional development and administrative activities. 90% of time will be devoted to clinical care, in either a 4- or 5-day workweek pattern, depending upon preference and support staff. This position is in a local primary care setting and may also include cross coverage in other local clinics, depending on applicant interest and practice needs. The APP will join a growing and collaborative group of physicians and APPs in the MUSC Department of Family Medicine, including supporting work in specific practice foci, such as addiction medicine.

Job Duties

Provides direct care to patients through the following activities:

• Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations

• Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline

• Initiates referrals to other health care providers, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician

• Documents and bills for direct care provided

• Collaborate effectively with local partners to help grow Community Geriatrics

• Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice

• Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research

• Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization

• Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education

• Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members

• APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law

Required Training and Experience

Required Minimum Training: 

Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN as noted below.

• Physician Assistant

or

• APRN

  • ANP (Adult NP): Adult pts (13 years to death), stable chronic disease state management or primary care setting.
  • FNP (Family NP): (birth to death) Stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan.

Preferred Experience:

Minimum of 1 year as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in a primary care or urgent care setting.
