Job Description Summary

The Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Fellowship is a one-year program designed to give graduates of Emergency Medicine residency programs the skills and knowledge to become ultrasound program directors and leaders in the field of Emergency Ultrasound (EUS).

Job Description

Job Duties:

There are three primary components to the EUS Fellowship program:

Education

  • Fellows will be expected to attend weekly EUS conference and demonstrate understanding of the content covered in the ultrasound curriculum.

  • Fellows will be expected to teach in both lab and lecture settings.

    • Instruct during one College of Medicine (COM) ultrasound lab per block (6/year).

    • Deliver two 15 minute lectures per month during resident rotations (6 /year).

    • Deliver two 45 minute lectures at Emergency Medicine conference.

    • Instruct at two GME ultrasound labs (2 labs/year).

    • Fellows will co-lead the curriculum development and organization of COM student elective rotation in Emergency Ultrasound

  • Fellows will attend at least one national meeting during the fellowship.

  • Fellows must perform a minimum of 1,000 scans throughout the year.  Two ultrasound scanning shifts must be completed each week, either in the Adult ED, Pediatric ED, or ICU.

Research

  • Fellows will be required to participate in at least one research project approved through the IRB.

Administration

  • Fellows will be required to complete one Quality Assurance project in the Department of Emergency Medicine involving ultrasound.

Additionally, fellows will be required to provide hands-on clinical care at both Emergency Departments at MUSC.  EUS fellows are expected to provide a total of 752 clinical hours per year, with the possibility to moonlight above these required hours if other fellowship requirements are met.

Licensures, Registrations, and Certifications

Candidate must be a graduate of an ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency and be board-certified or board-eligible.  A South Carolina medical license and hospital credentialing are required prior to start date of the EUS Fellowship.

(Continuous) Ability to lift and carry 150 lbs., unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to lift objects, up to 75 lbs., from floor level to height of 36 inches, unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to lower objects, up to 75 lbs., from height of 36 inches to floor level, unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to lift and carry patients weighing up to 300 lbs., assisted. (Frequent) Ability to push/pull objects, up to 200 lbs., unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. (Continuous) Good peripheral vision capabilities. (Continuous) Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction. (Continuous) Ability to hear and understand whispered conversations at a distance of 3 feet. Must be able to maintain bi-lateral hand movement skills. (Continuous) Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. (Continuous) Ability to be qualified physically (by medical personnel) for respirator use, initially and annually. Additional New Requirements: Ability to maintain a valid drivers license. Computer literacy. Ability to work rotating shifts. Ability to work overtime as required. Ability to learn and use new processes, tools and equipment as required.
