Job Description Summary

In partnership with the Drug Shortage Pharmacist, the drug shortage technician is responsible for assisting in the assessment, preparation and contingency planning for all drug shortages. The technician will assist the pharmacist with the procurement of shortage medications and inventory management specifically.

Job Description

  • Assist the drug shortage coordinator by obtaining counts for all medications from all MUHA pharmacies which are on the drug shortage watch list in preparation and planning for the weekly drug shortage call.
  • When needed, purchasing medications that are on shortage from alternative vendors or through direct purchases with manufacturers.
  • Appropriately organizing medications within the pharmacy distribution center that are on shortage, ensuring all counts are kept up to date and product is rotated to prevent product from expiring. 
  • Under the direction of the drug shortage coordinator, help to facilitate the transfer of medications between hospitals and from the distribution center to the pharmacies within the MUHA system who are in greatest need of product.
  • Assist with the transfer of all costs of procured medications to the end user. 

Additional Job Description

High school diploma or equivalent (GED) and at least six months of experience as a pharmacy technician is required.  Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician by the State of South Carolina Board of Pharmacy (SCBOP), and national certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required and must be maintained.
