Airbus Defence and Space is looking for a

Mission Operations Lead (d/f/m)

We have an exciting opportunity for a position as Operations Engineer in the field of Mission Operations for the Starlab project in the Department of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Suborbital Missions (TESPS3), to complement and strengthen our existing team.

In addition to our ISS/Columbus activities, we have recently been involved in the Starlab project. This involves the conception and development of a commercial space station for Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which is supported as part of the NASA Commercial Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) Destinations (CLD) program with the partner NanoRacks. We just successfully past the System Requirements review (SRR) and are currently supporting Nanoracks in the preparation and implementation of the System Design Review (SDR). A continuation of the activities for the next project milestones (PDR/CDR) is in preparation.

Your tasks and responsibilities

  • Provide Mission Operations expertise and support to the design and development of Starlab operations concept in an integrated and collaborative fashion, supporting design, development, and preparation of deliverables

  • Contribute to Starlab Mission ConOps and OpsCon definition and refinement

  • Define Mission Operations concepts and scenarios:

  • Spacecraft command & control concept, including commanding, telemetry, monitoring, caution & warning

  • Flight Control Team (FCT) and Ground Control Team (GCT) set-up, responsibilities, tasks and interfaces

  • Operations Products, e.g. Procedures, Flight Rules, Operations Interface Procedures

  • Mission Planning

  • Mission Safety

  • Anomaly handling process

  • On-call versus Off-console

  • Identification of innovative set of mission support tools

  • Inputs for the Training Process regarding Mission Operations

  • Refine and maintain the Starlab Mission Operations Plan

  • Contribute to associated RFIs/RFPs

  • Participate in program reviews

  • Coordination with other Mission Operations teams, e.g. NASA, Commercial Crew Transport and Cargo

  • Perform other duties as agreed and required

Desired skills and qualifications

  • Degree in aerospace, electrical/mechanical engineering, computer science (or equivalent)

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in the field of spacecraft operations/engineering, preferably with a focus on flight operations/engineering support

  • Knowledge of spacecraft systems and subsystems architectures and mission support concepts

  • Experience with mission planning, spacecraft commanding, trending, and analysis.

  • Ability to define and support programmatic aspects like engineering schedule and risks

  • Working knowledge of anomaly resolution process

  • Ability to generate and review technical documentation, e.g. SPECs, IRD/ICD

  • Experience with Systems Engineering processes, techniques, e.g. with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and tools (e.g. CAMEO), Requirements Engineering and tools (DOORS, JAMA)

  • Basic knowledge of computer-aided design

  • Ability to support integration and test activities on hardware and software

  • Ability to learn fast, able to work proactively and comfortable working in full autonomy, attention to details

  • Fluency in English, both in speech and writing - additional languages are a plus
