The Senior Director, Head of Medical Affairs Europe is responsible for leading the EU Medical Affairs team. Within the strategic framework of the CSL Behring portfolio and products, you will provide medical leadership, represent CSL Behring with medical thought-leaders and develop and implement effective regional medical initiatives.  You will thus ensure that CSL Behring is perceived as a scientific leader in the therapeutic areas we work in. The role will provide support to all franchise areas on a needs basis; a high degree of flexibility and the ability to prioritize will be required. The role requires interaction at a high level throughout Europe and Global functions and partners.  You will be proactive in communication to the countries, within the region and to global functions.

You will need to provide leadership to your direct reports and to matrix teams.  An excellent command of English, coupled with the ability to speak other European languages would be preferred.  The role requires frequent travel and can be located in one of the major Commercial Operations Europe offices (Germany, UK, Spain, Italy amongst others). 

Main responsibilities and accountabilities

  • Develop the European Medical Affairs strategy and plan as part of the respective EU Strategic Brand Plan (aligned with the respective global plan)
  • Collate regional specific insights where appropriate
  • Provide medical input into the EU market access strategy and material development. Actively shape the generation of real-world evidence
  • Responsible for co-ordination of investigator-initiated research across EU, liaising with affiliate and global TA medical colleagues
  • Represent Europe on Global Medical Affairs Leadership Team (GMALT), ensuring needs of the region are appropriately represented and contributing to global R&D and regulatory strategies
  • Ensure that EU (affiliate and regional level) publication plans are fully aligned with EU and global strategy and feed into the global publication strategy and plan
  • Develop and execute EU advisory boards in line with TA strategy and in full alignment the relevant European Business Team (EBT)/Therapeutic Area Team (TAT)
  • Participate in the development of Scientific Engagement strategy, patient support and advocacy strategy
  • Collaborate closely with the EU Country Medical Directors on the implementation of the Medical Affairs strategy in Europe.
  • Ensure and facilitate country Medical Affairs plans’ execution, focus on launch preparation excellence
  • Align Regional Medical resource deployment and budget to key regional priorities
  • Provide appropriate guidance on CSL Behring standards and policies to ensure that medical affairs teams in region Europe are ethically and legally compliant and proactively mitigate risk
  • Identify Regional Medical Affairs capability needs and upscale through training to sustain a fully aligned, result-oriented, highly effective medical organization
  • Facilitate the implementation of innovate channels and facilitate best practice sharing across Medical Affairs functions
  • Ensure excellence in stakeholder engagement to enhance collaboration and affirm CSL Behring as a trusted medical partner
  • Represent CSL Behring as a speaker and expert at congresses, roundtables and other external forums
  • Establish effective relationships with European medical opinion leaders working in our therapeutic areas
  • Track and analyze regional medical key performance indicators with a focus on impact (internal and external) and course correction
  • Provide medical input into regulatory affairs projects (e.g. development and review of regulatory file submissions)

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Degree in Medicine (MD, MBChB, or equivalent)
  • Fluent in English (oral and written), other European languages an advantage
  • At least 10+ years’ experience in pharmaceutical industry in roles with increasing responsibility and significant experience in Medical Affairs
  • Prior experience in above country (i.e. European) and country Medical Affairs role is critical
  • In-depth experience in at least one of the therapeutic areas in which CSL Behring is active, (i.e. immunology & neurology, (benign) hematology, respiratory, transplant, cardiovascular and metabolic)
  • Demonstrated inspirational leadership skills within large scientific-based organizations
  • Broad understanding of the healthcare system environment, and the role of the pharmaceutical industry
  • Comprehensive understanding of industry medical governance, with particular reference to compliance with EU and local laws, regulations, and codes of scientific and promotional practice
  • Effective collaboration across cross-functional and geographical boundaries, including high cultural awareness and adaptability
  • Proven ability to influence stakeholders (internal and external)
  • Strong analytical and project management skills
  • Experience in matrix leadership/management
  • Drive for innovation and continuous improvement
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Team leadership experience
