Assumes 24-hour accountability for managing, supervising, and coordinating the operational and financial effectiveness and efficiency of the nursing services/ unit of the hospital. Develops policies, procedures and processes in coordination with other leaders to ensure the highest quality services are provided at all times to all customers. Assures presence of a supportive and healthy work environment that promotes retention and embraces diversity. Key responsibilities include unit based goal setting, program development, fiscal management, resource allocation, standards of care, policy and procedure development and interpretation, human resource development, performance improvement, supports a culture of safety and maintenance of interprofessional collaborative relationships.

Nurse Managers in inpatient and outpatient units are REQUIRED to obtain their Nursing Administration or Professional/Specialty Certification within 12 months of assuming the role, or within 12 months of achieving eligibility to sit for the exam if not eligible upon hire in to the role.

Essential Functions

  • Assumes day-to-day accountability for the delivery of quality services by direct supervision of assigned staff and interdisciplinary collaboration. Evaluates nursing care and completes rounds to ensure that nursing care is carried out in accordance with regulatory, accrediting and professional practice standards, the philosophy, policies and procedures for the Nursing Division and organization. Ensures practice is in accordance with the Michigan Public Health Code. Develops interdisciplinary relationships to support improvements in care delivery, patient, staff and physician satisfaction.

  • Collaborates with director of nursing, nurses and patient care staff, physicians, and other departments to develop, implement, and evaluate programs and services that support patient care delivery in assigned area. This includes effective utilization of workforce, facilities and equipment. Participates, facilitates staff involvement and integrates advocacy in the development and review of policies, procedures, programs, and guidelines based on evidence based practice, research findings, and Spectrum Health quality outcomes. Provides information to senior leadership on the implication of policies, procedures and programs being formulated and recommends specific action.

  • Assists director to plan, prepare, implement, monitor assigned areas’ operational and capital budget to ensure sound fiscal management consistent with the goals of Spectrum Health. This includes resource allocation to meet productivity targets and patient care needs and assists in development of programs and collaborative strategies to enhance growth and revenue for assigned area.

  • Collaborates with director and manager of nursing quality to develop and maintain quality monitoring system to continuously monitor and measure the quality, safety and outcomes of nursing services for assigned area. Develops and implements unit quality indicators to evaluate unit performance, staff performance, level of practice for specific patient populations and develops and implements improvement plans to correct variances. Participates in and/or facilitates interdisciplinary performance initiatives.

  • Acts as resource for staff to identify and address ethical issues within nursing and assigned area. Formulates decisions and actions based on ethical principles, using the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses to guide practice. Evaluates and advocates for privacy, confidentiality, and security of patient, staff and organization data.

  • Creates a climate of effective communication and respect for diversity in all interactions. Facilitates an environment of caring and collaborative relationships among disciplines and departments. Collaborates with director, peers and staff to create and execute a vision for change that mobilizes, encourages, and unifies interprofessional and practice group teams. Develops, maintains, and evaluates a professional practice environment that empowers and supports staff participation by encouraging shared decision-making, accountability, and autonomy in nursing practice. Serves as a role model, mentor, and expert to staff, colleagues and students.

  • Encourages an environment supportive of nursing research. Supports an environment that promotes evidence-based, clinically effective, nurse-sensitive patient outcomes and other health care outcomes for assigned area. Supports a continuous learning environment to ensure on-going education and development opportunities for staff based on populations served, professional practice, new technology and/or required skills. Assists in the identification of trends and competencies in nursing practice.

  • Manages the activities of professional and support staff. Provides direction and support to subordinate staff to ensure effectiveness and efficiency. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the departmental policies, organization philosophy and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training and developing employees; planning and assigning work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; initiates personnel actions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Nursing Required

  • Master's Degree nursing, healthcare administration, business administration or related field Preferred

  • 2+ years of related clinical nursing experience Required

  • 1+ year of supervisory experience Required

  • MI Registered Nurse (RN) Required

  • AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) Required within 90 days

  • Specialty Certification Required within 1 year
