Full time, posted as Rotating with primary shift: 3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., rotating weekends.

General Summary:

Under direct supervision, provides centralized support according to AORN (Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses), AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation), CDC (Center for Disease Control), FDA (Food and Drug Administration), OSHA (Occupation Safety and Health Administration), and department policy in the areas of terminal sterilization and sterilization monitoring systems, decontamination and disinfection, preparation of surgical instrument trays, durable patient care equipment, case cart distribution and the maintenance of predetermined inventory levels and dispensing and distribution of sterile and non-sterile items from stock.

Essential Duties:

  • Maintain quality aseptic control procedures in a continuing effort to prevent and control the spread of infection with use of established PPE
  • Serves as a resource person for sterilization, decontamination, case cart preparation, surgical instrumentation and patient care supplies.
  • Disassembles, decontaminates, cleans, sorts, inspects and assembles surgical instrument trays, case carts, procedure carts and durable medical care equipment using manufacturers recommended guidelines. AAMI and AORN standards of practice will be followed to ensure items are safe for handling.
  • Assembles surgical instrument trays using established count sheets.
  • Maintain loaner tray system.
  • Sterilizes specialized, routine and other surgical instrumentation according to manufacturer, AORN and AAMI recommended guidelines and practices.
  • Responsible for all sterilizing and disinfection testing and monitoring of all sterilizers, washer/decontaminators, sonic, cart washer with documented results.
  • Establishes priority sterilization loads, develops load configuration based on weight and mass to aid in appropriate exposure to sterilant.
  • Ensures proper handling and storage of sterile instrumentation.
  • Will immediately isolate sterile items and initiate recall for positive biologicals or unmonitored implant loads.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of instrument tray inventory and location.
  • Builds accurate surgical case carts according to a prescribed Doctor Preference Card.
  • Transports prepared case carts for the next day to the OR for scheduled surgical cases. The case carts are stored in designated areas of the OR.
  • Orders and receives supplies from materials management, and stock (staff does not order specials) supplies. All items will be cross checked with receiver to ensure accuracy. Supplies will be rotated when placed on the shelves to ensure FIFO (first in-first out).
  • We do not issue supplies.
  • Maintains Beaumont Standard Code of Conduct as part of their everyday actions and attitude.
  • Participates in activities that promote professional growth including but not limited to certification requirements, Joint Commission, mandatory department and hospital in-services, and continuing education opportunities.
  • Utilize the instrument tracking system in performing all required job functions.

· Certification from IAHCSMM or CBSPD required within in 12 months of hire or transfer.

Other Qualifications:

· Must possess basic reading, math, and computer skills in order to access instrument tray and picklists. Must be able to distinguish between sterile and non-sterile; assure proper packaging techniques and appropriate sterilization cycles for all items. Must comprehend sterility maintenance, have a complete understanding of the sterilization process, and maintain a surgical conscience.

Frequently perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as working with cleaning tools and equipment and constantly performing tasks which require arm-hand steadiness such as operation of cleaning tools and equipment.

· Mobility: Position requires incumbent to constantly walk, stand, bend and squat to remove instruments from case carts.

· Visual Discrimination: Positions requires incumbent to constantly see objects closely as in inspecting instruments for cleanliness, reading detailed lists, labels etc.

· Hearing: Position requires incumbent to constantly be able to hear normal sound with some background noise as in answering phone/intercom. Occasionally be able to distinguish sound as in equipment alarms

Mental Requirements:

· Concentration: Position requires ability to constantly be able to concentrate on details with moderate amounts of interruptions such as paging and cleaning requests.

· Attention Span: Position requires ability to frequently attend to a task or function for more than 60 minutes at a time.

· Conceptualization: Position requires ability to constantly be able to understand and relate to specific ideas, concepts, and theories.

· Memory: Position requires ability to constantly remember multiple tasks/assignments over both short-term and long- term periods of time, such as schedule of work, job assignments, and specialized cleaning procedures, etc.
