What’s the role
Shell is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join its team in Sarnia.
The Engineering Services organization supports safe, reliable, and competitive operation of Shell Sarnia through disciplined engineering, technical assurance, asset integrity management, and delivery of fit-for-purpose electrical solutions.
The Senior Electrical Engineer provides electrical discipline leadership for assigned operating units and site electrical infrastructure, including technical assurance for capital projects and minor plant changes, support for asset care strategies, and resolution of medium- and long-term electrical threats.
The role serves as a site Technical Assurance resource for electrical plant changes and project assurance activities and contributes to capability development through coaching and mentoring of developing engineers and technical staff.
What you’ll be doing
- Provide electrical technical assurance for capital projects and plant changes, from early assessment through commissioning and start-up, ensuring designs and decisions are safe, compliant, fit for purpose, and aligned with Shell standards, site requirements, the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, CSA Z462, and other applicable standards.
- Develop and sustain electrical asset care, reliability, and long-term investment plans for assigned operating units and site electrical infrastructure, including preventative maintenance strategies, condition monitoring, obsolescence management, reliability improvements, and annual capital and non-routine maintenance requirements.
- Support turnaround planning, incident response, and operational reliability, including scope development, technical reviews, field execution support, investigation of electrical issues, and development of longer-term solutions to recurring threats and opportunities.
- Support and lead Management of Change activities and technical approvals, including appropriate roles as PEC, technical reviewer or approver, TA3, Electrical Discipline Hazard Assessment Leader, PSSR Leader, and action-item owner. Lead minor plant changes and provide required hazard screening, technical assurance, and start-up review.
- Maintain and improve electrical standards, drawings, procedures, and engineering practices, ensuring site documentation remains current and supporting vendor, supplier, and manufacturer quality assurance, contract management, standardization, and continuous improvement.
- Demonstrate strong HSSE and electrical safety leadership while working collaboratively across the site, including participation in production team routines, electrical safety audits, and coordination with the Electrical Reliability Team, Operations, Maintenance, Projects, and other engineering disciplines.
Engineering Services primarily focuses on mid- to longer-term activities, typically more than 90 days out, enabling delivery of the Asset Reference Plan and planning for future years. This includes turnaround scope and execution, longer-term threats and opportunities, obsolescence management, project development and assurance, incident investigation and solution development, and ownership and assurance of equipment care strategies. Shorter-term support may be required when agreed by Asset and discipline leadership.
What you bring
- Legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis.
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Minimum 10 years of electrical engineering experience in the petrochemical, refining, or industrial sector.
- Demonstrated electrical design and application experience with electrical systems up to 28 kV and motor control systems up to 5 kV.
- Experience with UPS systems, variable frequency drives, temporary power systems, hazardous area classification, and industrial electrical equipment.
- Experience supporting electrical asset reliability, preventative maintenance, run-and-maintain activities, turnarounds, and capital projects, including development of solutions for medium- and long-term electrical threats and equipment obsolescence.
- Experience with ETAP or equivalent electrical system modelling software.
- Knowledge and application of CSA Z462, Ontario Electrical Safety Code requirements, electrical equipment standards, and Management of Change processes.
- Experience with SAP/GSAP, engineering document management systems such as Assai, and Management of Change systems such as Cintellate is an asset.
- Familiarity with Shell Design Engineering Practices and Shell electrical/HSSE requirements is an asset.
