Job Description
We are seeking an experienced litigation lawyer to join our India Legal team as Senior Corporate Counsel (SCC). In this role, the SCC will independently manage a large and diverse portfolio of contentious matters — spanning commercial arbitrations, civil suits, consumer disputes, and high-stakes regulatory and enforcement proceedings. You will be a trusted advisor to the business, driving litigation strategy, managing risk, and protecting the company's interests across a complex and fast-moving legal landscape.
This is a high-impact, high-ownership role suited to a self-starter who thrives in a dynamic environment, is comfortable handling matters of significant financial and reputational exposure and can balance strategic judgment with hands-on execution.
Key job responsibilities
• Litigation portfolio management: Independently manage a high volume of litigation matters end-to-end, including commercial arbitrations, civil and commercial suits, consumer disputes, and regulatory/enforcement actions.
• Strategy & risk assessment: Develop and drive case strategy, assess litigation risk and exposure, and advise business and leadership on potential outcomes, settlement options, and mitigation.
• External counsel management: Select, instruct, and manage external counsel and law firms; control legal spend, review strategy and work product, and ensure cost-effective, high-quality outcomes.
• Regulatory & enforcement matters: Lead responses to regulatory inquiries, investigations, notices, and enforcement proceedings; engage with regulators and authorities as appropriate.
• Stakeholder advisory: Partner with business teams, compliance, and cross-functional stakeholders to provide clear, practical, and actionable legal advice on contentious issues.
• Pre-litigation & dispute resolution: Handle pre-litigation disputes, demand/response notices, and negotiate settlements; explore and drive alternative dispute resolution where appropriate.
• Governance & reporting: Maintain accurate case tracking, prepare litigation reports and risk dashboards for leadership, and ensure timely escalation of material matters.
• Process & knowledge: Contribute to playbooks, standardization of litigation processes, and continuous improvement in how the team manages disputes at scale.
Basic Qualifications:
- 13+ years of litigation experience
- Bachelor's degree in Law
- Enrolled and in good standing with the Bar Council of India.
- Strong track record in commercial arbitrations, civil/commercial suits, consumer disputes, and regulatory/enforcement matters — gained at a leading law firm and/or a reputed in-house legal team.
- Demonstrated experience independently managing a large volume of contentious matters simultaneously.
- Strong working knowledge of Indian civil procedure, arbitration law, consumer protection law, and the relevant regulatory frameworks.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working closely with and advising senior executives of an organization or equivalent
- Experience working independently and directly with all levels of legal and business partners or equivalent
- A blend of in-house experience at a large corporation, ideally in a high-volume, fast-paced industry, and experience as a practicing Advocate.
- Experience managing high-stakes, high-value litigation with significant financial or reputational exposure.
- Experience managing external counsel and controlling legal spend across a large docket.
- Excellent judgment, strong written and oral advocacy, and the ability to communicate complex legal risk to non-legal stakeholders.
- Proven ability to work autonomously, prioritize across competing demands, and operate with a high degree of ownership and bias for action.
