Tax Senior Manager

GDS India | GCR US-TARAS

Role name and description

The Tax Senior Manager is responsible for leading complex U.S. income tax accounting engagements, overseeing multiple client accounts, and providing strategic and technical direction across the engagement lifecycle. The role includes planning, risk management, quality oversight, staffing, engagement economics, stakeholder management, and the review of income tax accounting deliverables. The Senior Manager serves as a senior point of contact for clients and engagement leadership and acts as a coach and counsellor to Managers, Assistant Managers, and other team members.

The opportunity

When you join the EY GCR team, you will contribute to EY’s mission of building a better working world by applying deep technical knowledge, extensive analytical skills, sound professional judgment, and leadership experience to help clients meet their business and tax reporting objectives.

Your key responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee income tax accounting under ASC 740 and other relevant accounting standards as part of U.S. GAAP tax provisioning engagements.
  • Provide technical leadership on complex tax accounting matters, including current and deferred taxes, tax rate reconciliation, valuation allowances, uncertain tax positions under ASC 740-10, outside basis differences, tax credits, and tax attributes.
  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of GAAP-to-statutory and statutory-to-tax reconciliations, with a strong analytical focus on identifying, validating, and explaining tax adjustments required under U.S. GAAP.
  • Apply extensive analytical skills to evaluate large and complex data sets, identify trends and anomalies, assess financial statement impacts, perform reasonableness checks, and translate findings into clear recommendations for clients and engagement leadership.
  • Oversee tax provision forecasting, cash tax movements, recognized and unrecognized tax benefits, valuation allowance assessments, and the review of tax journal entries and disclosures.
  • Lead engagement planning and execution across multiple workstreams, ensuring that scope, milestones, dependencies, risks, and deadlines are actively managed.
  • Review complex workpapers and deliverables, challenge underlying assumptions, and ensure technical accuracy, consistency, completeness, and compliance with quality standards.
  • Manage client engagements, including staffing, utilization, budgets, engagement economics, change management, billing support, and resource planning.
  • Build trusted relationships with senior client stakeholders and internal leadership while consistently delivering exceptional client service.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes through standardization, automation, data analytics, and the effective use of technology.
  • Anticipate and escalate technical, delivery, quality, and commercial risks, and drive timely resolution in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
  • Adhere to practice protocols, independence requirements, risk management standards, and other internal processes.

Skills and attributes for success

  • Extensive analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to interpret complex financial and tax data, connect multiple data sources, identify root causes, and develop practical conclusions.
  • Strong technical knowledge of U.S. income tax accounting and ASC 740, with the ability to research, interpret, and apply accounting guidance and tax legislation to complex fact patterns.
  • Proven ability to lead multiple engagements and priorities in a deadline-driven environment while maintaining a strong focus on quality and risk management.
  • Executive-level written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax accounting matters clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership, coaching, and people-management skills, with the ability to build transparent, inclusive, and cohesive teams.
  • Ability to delegate effectively across levels, review work efficiently, provide actionable feedback, and support the growth of Managers and other team members.
  • Experience conducting performance reviews, supporting talent development, contributing to learning initiatives, and serving as a positive role model.
  • Ability to collaborate across engagement teams, service lines, geographies, and functions.
  • Commercial acumen and experience managing engagement economics, budgets, staffing, and client expectations.
  • Ability to support recruitment, succession planning, capability building, and broader practice-development activities.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and to articulating and supporting the strategy of the Tax Provisioning practice.

To qualify for the role, you must have

  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline; an MBA or relevant postgraduate qualification is preferred.
  • CPA, Enrolled Agent, Chartered Accountant, or another relevant professional qualification is preferred.
  • Minimum of 12 to 15 years of relevant professional experience, with substantial experience in U.S. tax accounting, ASC 740, and corporate income tax provision processes.
  • Experience leading complex or multi-entity U.S. tax accounting engagements and managing senior client and internal stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing technical work, managing teams, and delivering high-quality outcomes within agreed timelines.

Ideally, you’ll also have

  • Awareness of other U.S. federal, state, local, and international tax matters that may affect the tax provision.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply tax legislation, accounting guidance, and relevant technical literature.
  • Experience with tax provision software, enterprise financial systems, data visualization, automation, or analytics tools.
  • Experience supporting large, multinational, regulated, or publicly listed organizations.
  • A track record of driving process improvements and developing scalable, standardized delivery models.
