Software Engineer (Full Stack)

Maersk is hiring Software Engineers who can work across the stack to join the Visibility Platform team. The platform answers the questions "where is my shipment?" and "when will I get it?" with a high level of accuracy and timeliness. It is powered by tons of data from multiple sources, and this role provides an opportunity to innovate on how the right subset of that data is processed, served and presented to users in the right context.

About the role

In this role, you will work on a greenfield project that aims to provide increased quality of visibility into the movements of containerised shipments and associated attributes like delays, extra charges incurred, emissions, etc.

You will lead and own the features you pick up from first prototype to production, working across the tech stack. You will move comfortably between the front-end and the back-end, using modern coding agents to move fast and teammates for review and guidance.

Here are some of the things the role involves:

• Independently lead and own the design, delivery and long-term health of the features and services you build.

• Contribute freely to both the web front-end and the back-end services, using coding agents to explore unfamiliar code, produce working changes, and learn conventions as you go. Take responsibility for what you ship, regardless of who or what wrote the first draft.

• Work closely with the UX and product team to iterate and provide feedback on mocks and designs and how well they solve user problems.

• Build quick prototypes for exploring concepts. Be happy to throw some away and evolve others into solutions that are maintainable for a long time.

• Work backwards from the mocks and help design API structures that can power the views in an efficient and performant manner. Where existing APIs can be limiting, help explore alternate options in design that don't degrade the originally intended user experience.

• While building views, care deeply about semantic HTML, accessibility and rendering

performance, often with each going hand-in-hand with the other.

• While building services, build event driven applications and microservice-based APIs with a lot of focus on scalability, reliability and secure practices from the ground up.

• Work with Maersk's design system conventions and ensure consistency in design language across multiple micro-applications. Know when the conventions can be limiting and be comfortable stepping out of them.

• Ensure hygiene practices like test coverage, performance profiling, security checks etc. are put in place and gated with automated checks.

• Ensure applications emit the standard signals needed for effective monitoring and alerting.

• Actively participate in code reviews and encourage using them as a tool for team members to learn from each other. Review agent-assisted changes with the same rigour as any other.

• Contribute to a culture of continuous delivery where the path from code commit to going live is as automated as it can be.

• Work in an inclusive manner with team members across geographies, time zones and cultures.

About you

Here are some things we expect from you for the role.

Minimum qualifications

• Be highly proficient with either the back-end or the front-end, as described below. This is the minimum bar, and you should be able to independently lead and own delivery of major components, pages or services there with very little hand-holding.

• Back-end: Java or Kotlin and a framework like Spring Boot, with experience building event driven applications and microservice-based APIs that handle a huge amount of data.

• Front-end: Vue, React, Svelte or Angular, TypeScript, semantic HTML, modern CSS and responsive design. We mainly use Vue, so be open to it.

• Be able to contribute across the other side with the help of coding agents: enough familiarity to read the code, judge what an agent produces, write and run tests, and know when to ask a teammate for a second pair of eyes.

• Be adept at using modern LLM-based coding agents (like Claude Code or GitHub Copilot) to increase quality and speed of work, including giving them good context, verifying their output, and recognising when they are going wrong.

• Be highly proficient with a test framework like JUnit or Jest, and be a natural at always

maintaining high test coverage for any code written.

• Be familiar with analysing the algorithmic complexity of code, common design patterns and when to use them.

• Be familiar with at least one relational and one NoSQL database, and with observability concepts: logging, metrics, traces and alerts.

• Be familiar with cloud computing concepts and able to put them into practice, with experience in at least one of Azure, Google Cloud or AWS.

• Be familiar with a build system like Webpack, and with Node.js and the npm ecosystem. Be aware of common reusable open-source libraries, and mindful of not causing bloated dependencies.

• Be open to deep dives into new areas of the tech stack and learn new skills on the go.

• Be a stickler for developer productivity, and always be on the lookout to get things done more efficiently.

• Be effective at written and spoken communication. Also exhibit the same in writing code that can be well understood by other developers.

Preferred qualifications

• Be highly proficient on both sides: the back-end and the front-end described above, rather than one with agent-assisted contribution to the other.

• Be familiar with browser-based testing frameworks like Cypress to automate end-to-end user workflow tests, and with Core Web Vitals and how to build pages that render blazing fast, with measurements set up to be monitored continuously.

• Have an eye for extracting patterns for reusability that help ensure consistency across multiple applications.

• Previous experience working with visual elements like maps and charts that help display a massive amount of data in aggregated form.

• Prior experience working with Kafka, or with containerised 12-factor apps and tools like Docker and Kubernetes.

• Knowledge about the logistics and supply chain domain.
