Job Description

Amazon is seeking an experienced Automation Engineer to join our Reliability Maintenance Engineering (RME) team at IST2 Fulfillment Center in Istanbul. As we expand our capacity to 350,000 units with advanced automation systems including tote sorters, Ambaflex spirals, and extensive conveyor networks, you'll play a critical role in maintaining and optimizing our automated material handling systems. This is an exciting opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology in one of the world's largest e-commerce operations, ensuring24/7 uptime and reliability of mission-critical automation systems.

Key job responsibilities

Troubleshoot and repair automated material handling equipment including tote sorters, conveyors, Ambaflex spirals, and sortation systems
Program, maintain, and optimize Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) including Allen Bradley, Siemens, and other industrial control systems
Monitor and maintain SCADA systems, HMIs, and building management systems
Perform root cause analysis on automation failures and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence
Respond to emergency breakdowns and provide technical support for automation systems across all shifts
Collaborate with Controls Engineering, Operations, and RME teams to implement automation improvements
Develop and maintain documentation including electrical schematics, PLC programs, and standard operating procedures
Lead automation projects including system upgrades, installations, and commissioning of new equipment
Train and mentor technicians on automation systems, troubleshooting techniques, and safety protocols
Ensure compliance with electrical codes, safety standards, and Amazon's maintenance best practices


A day in the life
As an Automation Engineer at IST2, you'll start your day reviewing system performance metrics and automation issues. You'll work closely with shift RME teams to prioritize critical repairs, troubleshoot PLC faults on the tote sorter, and optimize conveyor flow rates. You'll spend time on the floor diagnosing sensor failures, updating ladder logic programs, and collaborating with Operations to minimize downtime. Your internal stakeholders include RME Managers, Area Managers, Shift Supervisors, and the Maintenance Planning team. You'll solve complex problems ranging from intermittent control system faults to full system integrations, ensuring our customers receive their orders on time through reliable automation performance.

The IST2 RME team consists of 20 dedicated professionals responsible for maintaining a 350,000-unit capacity fulfillment center with advanced automation systems. Our mission is to deliver world-class reliability through proactive maintenance, continuous improvement, and technical excellence. As the first dedicated Automation Engineer at IST2, you'll have the opportunity to build automation standards, mentor technicians, and shape the future of our maintenance operations during this exciting expansion phase.

Basic Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical-Electronical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, or related technical field with bachelor degree.
- 2+ years of experience programming and troubleshooting PLCs (Siemens, or equivalent platforms)
- Experience with automated material handling equipment, conveyor systems, or sortation systems
- Knowledge of electrical systems including3-phase power, motor controls, VFDs, and industrial sensors
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, and control system documentation
- Proficiency in English for technical communication and documentation

Preferred Qualifications:

- Advanced PLC programming skills including structured text, function blocks, and HMI development
- Experience with SCADA systems, industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, DeviceNet), and building automation systems
- Familiarity with automated material handling systems (conveyors, sorters, pack machines, robotic systems)
- Lean Manufacturing, or TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) certification
- Experience leading automation projects including system design, installation, and commissioning
- Knowledge of safety systems including light curtains, safety PLCs, and machine guarding standards
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience using data to drive maintenance decisions
- Ability to work flexible hours including on-call support for critical automation issues
- Turkish and English language proficiency
