Senior Project Engineer - Space Systems Product Development (Onsite)

Collins Aerospace is one of the world's largest suppliers of technologically advanced aerospace and defense products. The ISR & Space Systems business unit provides products and services to global government and commercial customers that enable mission success in the harshest environments of

space, in the air, at sea, and on the ground. We design and manufacture Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) and Active Thermal Control Systems (ATCS) on a number of space & sea platforms including the International Space Station, the U.S. space suit, the next generation of space vehicles such as CST-100 and Orion, and the US Navy’s submarine fleet.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating and setting team meeting agendas, leading team meetings and driving action item closures
  • Lead a matrixed team to successful completion of goals by understanding the roles of each discipline and ensuring each function is set up for success
  • Team activity scope control, including status and corrective action plans to budget challenges
  • Coordination of engineering change activities
  • Coordination and driving failure investigation activities
  • Driving issue resolution closures due to assembly, test, and procurement challenges
  • Integral to the definition of critical requirements which satisfy performance needs at target cost and schedule
  • Interfacing with suppliers to characterize commercially available products
  • Planning and coordination of Preliminary and Critical Design Reviews
  • Become subject matter experts in internal processes bringing new products to market
  • Prepare and present project specific information and status against milestones to internal customers

The candidate will drive the execution of all engineering responsibilities on the program while meeting customer expectations. Direct communication with internal customers will be required – including daily tagups, weekly meetings, and quarterly meetings. This position requires strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written), technical experience, and the ability to work as cross-functional team member.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations OR Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years experience OR In absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience is required 
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in related Engineering discipline(s) required. Experience with environmental control hardware (e.g. thermal and humidity control, air revitalization, water reclamation etc.)
  • Exceptional organizational, analytical, written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize both daily issues and strategize longer term projects
  • Superior interpersonal and influencing skills, including coaching and mentoring of other engineering staff
  • Strong computer skills, MS Office, Windchill
  • Natural presence/comfortable presenting to internal customers and management
  • Ability to bring team members together and work problems to resolution
  • A desire to lead with the purpose of improving IPD Team performance
