Collins Aerospace has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Pump Design Engineer.  We’re looking for a passionate professional to accept a high level of responsibility within a fast-paced, dynamic environment.  Candidate must have fuel pump design and analysis experience, particularly with positive displacement balanced and/or F vane, gear, and/or axial piston pumps. Experience designing centrifugal and external gear pumps is also valued. Candidate must also have strong manufacturing knowledge, exhibiting demonstrated knowledge in developing cost effective and robust pumping solutions to customer’s needs.  Candidate must excel at communication both in verbal and written formats, with the ability to adapt communication for a wide range of audiences including internal and external customers.  Candidate must have experience supporting product root cause investigations, as design engineering plays a key role in solving any product issues during the development process.  This also includes evaluating empirical data to validate design tools and reconcile pump design/analysis results with test data.

The work associated with this position will be performed onsite in Rockford, IL.  This position is eligible for relocation.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for completing design and analysis tasks for one or more pump programs, including driving development activities on-schedule and within budget, while ensuring all technical and regulatory requirements are met.
  • Design support across all phases of the design cycle, concept & optimization, preliminary through detailed design, development, validation, certification, manufacturing, and operational service.
  • Design new products and processes and improve and maintain existing products to help create better products or processes and ensure that the current and future needs of the business are met.
  • Design and implement common procedures and standard work across the organization to optimize efficiency and quality.
  • Develop data and make layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposal.
  • Resolve design problems of difficult-to-complex scope to ensure project completion.
  • Review completed layouts and drawings to ensure clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning.
  • Design mechanical components and assemblies with an emphasis on manufacturability, reliability, and maintainability
  • Work with suppliers for sizing and selection of supplier design components (valves, EHSV, sensors, and motors)
  • Evaluate and determine suitability of non-conforming (NCM) products including documentation of rationale.
  • Validate design models and tools with empirical data from test programs
  • Be a key participant in root cause investigations
  • Conduct sustaining activities for fielded products

Qualifications/Experience Needed:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience OR an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience OR in absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Aircraft system knowledge, particularly fuel and oil systems, and aerospace industry experience is preferred. 
  • Familiarity with industry design, test and certification standards for aerospace pumping systems is also preferred.
  • Aerospace Industry experience preferred
  • MATLAB modeling and programming experience is highly preferable.
  • CFD analysis experience in ANSYS Fluent or STAR-CCM+ is preferable as well.
  • Pump Design experience is preferred
  • Centrifugal and axial piston pump experience is preferred.
