Collins Aerospace is currently seeking qualified candidates for experienced systems engineer position in our Business & Regional Avionics Flight Management Systems department located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

This position involves architecting, development and certification of Flight Management Systems (FMS) software for commercial and military products. We are seeking a highly motivated engineer that is ready to join our FMS Engineering team to aid in development of innovative solutions for our wide customer base. The candidate will work with customers in both commercial and military markets. This position provides the opportunity to architect our flight management solutions and build a broad professional network across the Avionics business units. The candidate will interface with many areas and resources outside the FMS department including external customers, Avionics Systems and Program Management teams. Flexibility to adapt to expectations and processes of our various customers is required.

Teams are composed of cross-functional engineers working in an Agile environment (approximately 6-10 people) focused on the design and development of software-only products. Fusion FMS - Our latest deployed FMS product, leveraging the latest in integrated avionics systems of our Pro Line Fusion product line; missionizing products originally developed for our Business and Regional Jet market, to support a number of military platforms around the globe. This is an onsite position based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Relocation assistance may be available.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Be the technical lead for FMS feature development tasks, including design implementation plans, system requirements, and system level integration testing
  • Be the primary technical point of contact for our customers as needed
  • Support technical proposal preparation, compliance matrix development, and engineering bids
  • Requirements capture, allocation, traceability, validation, and verification of requirements
  • Support internal teams of systems and software engineers to develop, integrate and field FMS products
  • Execute systems testing in the lab setting to verify functionality and requirements.
  • Execute aircraft ground and flight test activities where required.
  • Continuously grow flight management systems architecture knowledge and background as a subject matter expert.
  • The successful candidate in this role will bring a teamwork focus and a desire to learn.
  • The role is highly dynamic, often requiring coordination among the various subsystem teams and rapid resolution of technical issues that arise.
  • Coaches, reviews and delegates work to less experienced engineers
  • Some domestic and international travel as needed (domestic and international <20%)

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience.
  • Must have experience with full life cycle software engineering processes
  • Must have project management or some experience leading teams

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Skills and knowledge in system, software engineering and general problem solving. 
  • Experience planning and executing programs using the Agile framework.
  • Defense or Aerospace industry experience.
  • DO-178B, ARP-4754A or similar certification based development experience is preferred.
