Job Summary:

Raytheon is looking for a Software Meteorology Engineer II with a Meteorological background to work in a exciting Agile development environment for modernizing science-inspired applications to operate on cloud platforms.  Our team provides acceleration of community-developed scientific and technological enhancements into the operational applications for Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and improved Research to Operations (R2O). As a member of the team, you will ensure adherence to operational agreements and polices (including response times), compliance to program and customer standards and requirements (including Section 508 compliance), leveraging of industry best practices for automation and scalability of assets, and implementation of issue detection and alerts.  

  • This position is a fully remote position.

Responsibilities to Anticipate:

  • Work on a small agile team to deliver Unified Forecast System (UFS) weather model and associated Applications through code management.
  • Engage the weather model and application community to improve forecast skill to the nation.
  • Develop and manage advanced scripts for flexible end-to-end system testing and integration.
  • Design, setup, and conduct pre-implementation tests for experimental model runs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

Typically requires a Bachelor’s in science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM preferred) and a minimum of 2 years of prior engineering experience or equivalent experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.

  • Knowledge of the Unified Forecast System (UFS) weather model, short range weather application, LandDA applications and UFS model components, specifically FV3, CCPP, MOM6, ESMF and NUOPC, UPP, and Soack-Stack, ufs-bundle, and JEDI skylab. 
  • Knowledge of workflow development to enable a UFS capabilities.
  • Ability to optimize and benchmark Fortran source code for UFD model and applications.
  • Knowledge of the implementation of data assimilation frameworks such as UFS-JEDI. 
  • HPC experience in both on-premise and cloud computing technologies.
  • Knowledge of end-to-end model testing frameworks for UFS applications
  • Experience using programming languages such as Fortran and Python in an Agile environment.  
  • Simulation and Modeling experience in an HPC environment (cloud and on-prem).
  • At least 1 year of Lifecycle Development experience (e.g., Requirements, Design, Testing).
  • Ability to communicate technical information to stakeholders and the scientific community, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work as a member of small team using the Scrum methodology. 
  • Proven ability to prioritize and implement multiple concurrent project activities. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using programming languages such as Fortran, Python, C or C++ in an Agile environment.
  • Knowledge of Agile or Lean-based development principles (e.g., Sprints, Scrums, Backlogs).
  • Knowledge of Cloud Services in a Commercial Infrastructure as a Service (IAAS) or Platform as Service (PAAS) environment.

The salary range for this role is 62,000 USD - 124,000 USD; however, RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
