Job Summary:

The Pratt & Whitney Engineering organization is focused on delivering customer requirements, advancing market-differentiating technologies, leading continuous improvement, and developing technical leadership.  The Mechanical Systems, Externals and Nacelles (MSEN) Engineering Module Center is responsible for design, validation, manufacture, and delivery of most of the engine hardware.  This includes external plumbing, components, and ducts, Lubrication and Thermal Management Systems, the rotor support hardware including bearings, seals, oil tanks and pumps and complex castings.

We’re seeking a goal oriented, detail-focused Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join the Externals design team.  This position requires creative design skills in engine hardware arrangement and packaging to achieve maintainable, low-cost systems while meeting structural and functional requirements. Working on inter-disciplinary teams, the selected candidate will perform mechanical design of gas turbine engine fuel, hydraulic, lubrication, air management plumbing and electrical and harness systems hardware.  The person will be expected to work onsite often to support Advanced Military programs.

In this position you will be in a fast-paced environment, working with experienced design engineers on conceptual, preliminary and detail design activities related to engine architectures.  You’ll learn about what is required in the overall design process of parts for engines including new and existing designs.  All design work will utilize UG-NX solid modeling as well as other modeling and analysis tools. External hardware includes a vast and challenging array of parts including tubes, brackets, electrical harnesses, and component mounts. Our team collaborates with virtually every module on a PW gas turbine engine as well as integration of different systems on the engine including lubrication, electrical, fuel and air systems.  We routinely interface with other disciplines including structures, project, and product definition.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop technically sound design solutions within program schedule milestones that meet cost and weight goals.

  • Understand technical processes and design requirements of gas turbine externals hardware including plumbing and ducting systems, component mounts, sheet metal brackets and electrical harnesses.

  • Learn and apply sophisticated solid modeling and analysis tools in a highly proficient manner.

  • Utilize standard work and CORE/ACE tools to continuously improve the externals design process.

  • Communicate with team leadership and management on status and risks to program schedule and metrics (cost, weight, performance, etc.).

  • Ability to negotiate design criteria/space with other groups including internal as well as external customers.

  • Ability to complete complex tolerance stacks for fit/function.

  • Travel less than 10%

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field

  • 5+ years of Engineering experience; OR an Advanced degree with 3+ years of relevant experience.

  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering degree preferred.

  • Existing US Government Security clearance a plus.

  • Advanced mechanical design experience within aerospace or turbofan engine industry

  • Experience with CAD (UG NX, Solidworks, or similar) solid modeling and finite element analysis tools (i.e., ANSYS or similar).

  • Understanding of hardware, blueprints, dimensions & tolerances (GD&T), and manufacturing methods.

  • Ability to interface effectively with both internal and external customers.

  • Programs and/or project management experience preferred; PMP certification a plus.

  • Proficiency in use of program/project management tools (i.e., SAP, EVMS, Teamcenter).

  • Knowledge of continuous improvement principles and tools (i.e., LEAN, CORE, ACE, or Six-Sigma).
