Internship (d/m/f) – Femtosecond frequency metrology for Space Applications - Immenstaad am Bodensee | Airbus Job

Job Description:

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic student for above position, educated in fields such as physics, optics or photonics. This exciting opportunity involves working in our laboratory for enabling technology in Friedrichshafen on an in-house developed optical frequency comb (OFC) for space applications. As an intern you will join a dynamic team of scientific engineers dedicated to push the boundaries of precision optical metrology instruments and their applications in space.

Your tasks will include:

• System Development: Participating in the end-to-end development of frequency comb technologies.
• Optical Engineering: Designing, assembling, testing, and optimizing complex optical systems (e.g., femtosecond pulse compression, amplification, and beat detection).

• Lab Operations: Supporting essential laboratory activities to ensure seamless experimental workflows.

• Data Science & Modeling: Performing data analysis, numerical simulations, and statistical modeling to interpret and validate experimental results.

Your qualifications:

• Academic Background: Enrolled in a Master's degree program (or equivalent) in the field of physics, optics, photonics or closely related fields.
• Hands-on Experience: Practical experience in handling and developing optical setups (e.g. single mode fibres, couplers, optical gratings, laser diodes, nonlinear frequency doubling or mixing, optical beat-note detection or interferometry) is a significant advantage.
• Technical Skills: Practical programming skills with MATLAB or Python for data processing or automation is an essential asset.
• Theoretical Knowledge: Geometrical optics and/or nonlinear optics background to perform analytical evaluations and optimisation is favourable.
• Personal Attributes: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and propose innovative solutions.
• Team Spirit: Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
