Job Description
Amazon is looking for an Indirect Tax Senior Manager to lead indirect tax support for our digital and devices businesses, including Alexa, Twitch, Amazon Music and Amazon Leo. You will be the tax partner these businesses rely on as they launch new products, enter new countries and build new commercial models, working directly with Product, Engineering, Finance and Legal so that tax is right at launch.
The role covers connected devices, digital services and streaming and gaming, and satellite internet connectivity. The technical work is varied covering digital services and subscriptions, hardware bundles with content or services, marketplace and platform models, billing system design, and the interaction with direct tax, transfer pricing and accounting. You will build strong relationships with the businesses you support, understanding their product roadmaps, commercial models, systems and decision-makers.
Key job responsibilities
- Owning the indirect tax position for the businesses you support, covering new product launches, country expansions and changes to commercial models, from initial design through to launch and ongoing operation
- Partnering with business and product teams early in the development cycle so that tax is reflected in business requirements
- Working with Tech/Engineering teams to translate tax requirements into system logic, resolve open points and test the outcome before launch
- Advising on customer-facing outputs, including invoicing, billing, pricing displays and customer communications
- Advising on the tax terms of customer, vendor and content agreements
- Assessing and quantifying indirect tax risk, supporting reserve and disclosure positions with Accounting, and keeping the business informed of relevant changes in law
- Managing external advisors: setting the scope of advice, evaluating the output independently and reaching a sound position
- Handling engagement with tax authorities, including audits and enquiries.
- Providing technical direction to and developing more junior colleagues
Whilst this role is advisory, you will work closely with compliance colleagues on registrations, returns, audits and process improvements.
A day in the life
The role typically involves moving between three types of work. Advisory work with business and tech teams on new features, product launches and country expansions, ensuring that tax treatment is understood, agreed and implemented before launch. Ongoing support for the live business, including advisor queries, positions to be documented, and questions raised by Finance or Legal. Ad-hoc work, including engagement with tax authorities, working with tax policy to review legislative changes, and support for wider planning work across the digital services and consumer devices portfolio where relevant.
About the team
The Digital and Devices Tax team supports Amazon's digital services, consumer devices and satellite broadband businesses globally, with colleagues in the US, London and Luxembourg. We work directly with business teams and with Accounting, Legal, Finance and the wider Tax organisation. Basic Qualifications:
- 10+ years of tax, finance or a related analytical field experience
- Experience advisory experience in a large accounting/consultancy practice, law firm, tax authority or business in-house.
- Experience in international indirect tax planning and strong understanding of or practical experience with tax laws in other countries
- Experience liaising with tax authorities including responding to audits and information requests
- Experience analyzing and reviewing statutes, regulations, and case law and then extracting data to make appropriate recommendations
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working effectively across cross-functional teams and partner well with people at all levels within an organization, including coaching of junior staff
- professional tax, accounting or legal qualification (e.g., Chartered Accountant (CA), Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA), Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA), Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) or similar), or J.D.
- Experience with indirect tax in a technology, e-commerce, media or telecommunications business
- Experience advising on the indirect tax treatment of digital services, subscriptions, software or consumer devices
- Experience writing tax requirements for systems and working with technology teams through user acceptance and production testing
- Experience with e-invoicing, digital reporting obligations or tax engine implementations
- Experience with ASC 450 reserve assessment and disclosure for indirect taxes
