Assistant Chief Engineer – JLL

What this job involves: The Assistant Chief Engineer is responsible for supporting the daily operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of building systems within a commercial facility environment. This role plays a key part in ensuring reliable building performance, operational efficiency, safety compliance, and an exceptional occupant experience. The position requires a hands-on engineering professional with strong technical expertise across HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and general building systems, along with the ability to lead by example, support team development, and assist the Chief Engineer with site operations and maintenance initiatives.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other building systems and equipment.

  • Utilize the CMMS system to manage and complete corrective and preventive maintenance work orders in alignment with service level agreements and site KPIs.

  • Monitor building automation systems (BAS), respond to alarms, and diagnose system issues to maintain optimal building performance.

  • Support and lead engineering team members by sharing technical knowledge, assigning work, and promoting safe and efficient work practices.

  • Conduct facility rounds, identify operational concerns, document findings, and initiate work orders for corrective action.

  • Maintain accurate engineering records including refrigerant logs, safety documentation, equipment readings, and maintenance reports.

  • Provide high-quality customer service to tenants and occupants while minimizing disruption during maintenance activities.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent with technical training, certification, or related degree.

  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in commercial building engineering, maintenance, or related technical operations.

  • Universal EPA/CFC certification required.

  • Valid Tennessee Driver’s License with the ability to respond to emergency calls within 45 minutes.

  • Strong working knowledge of HVAC systems, electrical systems, plumbing systems, pumps, motors, air handlers, and automation/controls systems.

  • Ability to work independently, participate in an on-call rotation, and support after-hours building operations as needed.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, CMMS platforms, and mobile communication technology.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years of trade school education or documented apprenticeship in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, or related skilled trades.

  • Experience supporting commercial office, industrial, or critical environment facilities.

  • Knowledge of OSHA safety standards, job safety analysis (JSA), and safe work practices in commercial facilities.

  • Experience mentoring or training maintenance and engineering team members.

  • Familiarity with energy efficiency initiatives, cost savings programs, and in-house self-performed maintenance models.

  • Strong customer service, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Experience serving in a lead engineering or interim supervisory capacity.
