Job Description

We're looking for an experienced Software Development Manager to lead one of the engineering teams responsible for Amazon's General Ledger (GL) and financial close systems — the mission-critical technology that accurately accounts for approximately 900 million transactions per month across the entire company. This is a rare opportunity to lead at the center of a multi-year financial transformation: re-architecting how Amazon runs its General Ledger and closes its books, and building the next generation of these systems for 2028 and beyond.

You'll lead a team of software engineers who own critical parts of the close lifecycle — spanning sub-ledger integration, journal and ledger processing, and close orchestration — delivering high-impact automation for our Finance and Global Business Services (FGBS) customers. As close timelines compress and expectations for accuracy and speed rise, your team's work directly shapes the confidence Amazon has in its financial numbers, at scale.

This role is defined by change. Amazon's General Ledger is being re-built and its surrounding processes redesigned end to end — close calendars are shortening, manual touchpoints are being engineered out, and the target-state architecture is being built now. You will operate with significant autonomy to set technical strategy, make architectural decisions that carry across the current and future state, and lead your team through the transition without compromising the reliability of a system that cannot fail during close.

The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise in large-scale distributed systems, preferably a background in financial or ERP systems, and a proven ability to lead teams through ambiguous, high-stakes transformation while keeping production healthy. You work backwards from customer needs, you're comfortable when both the business problem and the technology approach require invention, and you can hold a long-term vision while shipping incremental value every sprint. You'll partner closely with finance, controllership, product, and technology stakeholders to translate complex accounting requirements into scalable, automation-first solutions.

If you're energized by leading a team that is redefining the future of Amazon's General Ledger — modernizing the technology, compressing the close, and building toward a touchless, self-healing future state — we want to hear from you.

Key job responsibilities
- Lead architecture, design, and delivery of GL and close systems, making technical decisions that balance near-term reliability with the long-term target state
- Define and drive the technical vision and roadmap for your team, working backwards from FGBS customer needs and the broader GL modernization program
- Guide your team through system and process transformation — sequencing migration, modernization, and automation work while protecting the integrity and timeliness of every close
- Build, mentor, and manage a high-performing team of software engineers, fostering a culture of automation-first thinking and technical excellence
- Own operational metrics and system health for GL and close systems, establishing mechanisms to monitor progress and drive continuous improvement
- Partner with finance, controllership, and product teams to translate complex accounting requirements into scalable technical solutions
- Recruit, hire, and develop top engineering talent, creating clear career paths and coaching that helps your team grow
- Champion automation and rapid iteration, continuously eliminating manual touchpoints to shorten Amazon's financial close timeline

About the team
We are the engineering organization behind Amazon's General Ledger and month-end close — one of the most complex and high-stakes financial processes in the company. Our teams own the timely and accurate closure of sub-ledgers and the General Ledger, ensuring that approximately 900 million transactions per month are accounted for with precision, along with the foundational GL functions — ledger setups, posting and recurring schedules, journal processing, and close orchestration — that keep Amazon's financial engine running.

What sets us apart is a relentless drive toward automation and modernization. We are actively building the next generation of Amazon's General Ledger and redesigning the close processes around it, with the goal of a faster, more resilient, and ultimately touchless close. Every sprint moves us closer to that future state — and this role helps lead the way there.

- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
- Experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
