Software Development Manager, Amazon Devices Metrics Transport - Denver

Job Description

The Amazon Devices Metrics Transport team builds device middleware and high scaled cloud services (>100MM TPS), that enable teams across Amazon to collect metrics from Amazon Devices and Applications. The team's technology enables observability of engagement, stability and performance of our devices and apps at scale. Our transport is used by all Amazon Devices (Kindle, Fire Tablets, Fire TV, Tablets and Smart Home Devices) and mobile apps (Amazon Shopping, Alexa Mobile App, Audible, Prime Video etc.).

As the Software Development Manager (SDM), you will lead the software engineering team that has the end ownership of all engineering building blocks for the metric transport. This includes (1) software that run as middleware on our devices on various operating systems, (2) libraries included in iOS and Android mobile apps, (3) multiple high TPS cloud services for ingestion and metric forwarding, and (4) consoles and dashboards enabling teams with Amazon to onboard and monitor metrics.

You will own the engineering roadmap for the team and work collaboratively with product and program management to define and deliver the roadmap. You will be responsible for hiring and career development of software engineers. You will set the technical direction for the team to build highly performant, scalable and extensible device software and cloud services.

You will establish a team culture that focusses on engineering and operational excellence. You will set and shepherd the Agile/Scrum environment to deliver high quality software against aggressive schedules. As a technical leader, you will also establish architectural principles, have inputs into selecting design patterns and mentoring team members on their appropriate application

Basic Qualifications:

- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
- 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
