Job Description Summary

Plans, implements, and coordinates a standardized method of delivering clinical care for the trauma patient population in accordance with the SC DHEC and American College of Surgeons Standards for trauma management. Assists in developing and maintaining strong relationships with all area Emergency Management Services. Works closely with the ED Director and/or Designee to provide ongoing education and training on trauma care for all pertinent staff, providers and community partners as needed.

Job Description

Work Environment:

May work in both office setting and in clinical setting around patients.   Varying work schedule.

  

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Trauma Data PIPS Coordinator and Trauma Registry Coordinator.   Others as needed.

Financial Responsibilities:

Maintain departmental budget and active participant in hospital trauma reimbursement activities.

Essential Functions:

Manages the trauma program budget.

Coordinates the performance improvement process, program development, planning, organizing, implementation, and monitoring.

Coordinates education for physicians, clinical, and ancillary staff, patients, and community outreach.

Oversees patient tracking and concurrent and retrospective chart abstraction for patient monitoring and improvement opportunities.

Aids in trauma related disaster management initiatives for the hospital. Facilitates EMS outreach and transport initiatives on behalf of the trauma program.

Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by participating and leading in statewide and regional trauma committees, meetings, and educational offerings.

Facilitates injury prevention activities on behalf of the trauma program. Collaborates with Trauma Medical Director, physicians and other health care professionals to provide clinical and system oversight for the care of trauma patients.

Oversees maintenance of trauma registry and transfers of data to state and national levels.

Works to build strong relations between MUSC Orangeburg and our EMS partners to ensure a collaborative working relationship.

Education/Outreach

1. Acts as an extended liaison for emergency medical services agencies.

2. Serves as an internal resource for staff in all departments, including but not limited to mentorship of

other healthcare professionals in the care of the adult trauma population.

3. Works in conjunction across the system with other departments to ensure they have a strong and

 effective trauma orientation processes.

4.  Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive education patient

 programs that assure quality and appropriateness of care across settings for the adult trauma patient

population. Facilitates the utilization of the Learning Center in program implementation as appropriate.

5. Designs and orchestrates the delivery of applicable communication to internal and external

constituents. Financial Leadership

6. Annually develops and maintains the trauma program budget based on direction using variance

 analysis, performance experience of prior years and predictors for change.

7.  Adjusts systems as necessary to meet budget and/or productivity targets for cost effective quality

 care, including monthly analysis of financial information.

8.  Develops and monitors systems to assure cost effectiveness by participating in the selection,

 utilization of materials and supplies, and monitoring charges across departments.

Physical Requirements:

Physical requirements are primarily related to the essential functions of any job. In order to perform the essential functions of this position, you must be able to sit, walk, stand, use your hands, reach, talk, and hear; lift or exert energy up to 10 pounds 75 % of the time and up to 25 pounds 25% of the time and close vision

Able to read, analyze and interpret complex scientific, clinical or business journals, financial reports or legal documents; respond to sensitive inquiries or complaints from guests, regulatory agencies, staff and members of the business community; write persuasive correspondence, speeches, and articles for publication; effectively present information to top management and medical staff; work with complex mathematical concepts related to probability, statistical inferences, and to apply these concepts to practical situations; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; deal with concrete and abstract concepts and interpret verbal, nonverbal and written instructions.

Population Served:

This position may interact with all age groups, but primarily adults; may provide direct patient care. All staff members must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to meet the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related needs of the persons in the assigned work area.

Additional Job Description

Required:  

South Carolina RN license and five (5) years' experience in acute care nursing, including two (2) years in acute care trauma; ED experience preferred bachelor’s degree in nursing, or be willing to begin accredited program within one year of start date (and complete within three years of start).  Strong project management skills that include organizational, analytical, verbal and written communication, with attention to details. Experience with Word and Excel. 

Preferred: 

At least two (2) years management experience; Certification in TNCC, CATN or ATCN; Knowledge of regulatory requirements to include standards set forth by the American College of Surgeons, Joint Commission, and CMS.
