Internship within Flight Simulation Visualization Gimbal  (d/f/m)

In order to visualize Flight Dynamics Simulation data two kinds of methods can be used. The first is the visualization of the aircraft responds as part of an engineering software application such as 2d plotting or 3D flight path visualization. The second possibility, however, is the dynamic representation of the aircraft rotary and attitude states on a physical dynamic gimbal. The internship will concentrate on the second option.

Your location

Located about an hour’s drive north of Munich, Manching is an up-and-coming market town that offers a wide range of leisure and cultural activities. Here, you can enjoy the quality of life in the countryside while the pleasures of near-by cities are still within easy reach.

Your tasks and responsibilities

  • Refine the current construction of the gimbal with respect to all three aircraft axis (pitch, roll and yaw) as well as the servo motors to actuate the model control surfaces

  • Develop an IP interface between a Matlab/Simulink environment and the raspberry pi to feed the dynamic gimbal with data to move in real-time

  • Select a real time capable board and microcontroller used as master for controlling all axis of the gimbal

  • Deploy a RTOS on the microcontroller

  • Select an COTS IMU to be placed within the center of rotation

  • Design the feedback of the IMU signals to the main processing board

  • Finalize the implementation of Daisy Chain SPI to control all gimbal axis and aircraft control surfaces

  • Build the system with a rapid prototyping approach (3D printing of physical components)

  • Document the development and results

Desired skills and qualifications

  • Enrolled full time student (d/f/m) within aerospace engineering,
control system engineering or similar field of study

  • Theoretical knowledge on micro controllers
