Job Description:

Position Title: Staff Specialist - Psychiatrist - Correctional Health 
Employment Type: Temporary Fixed term up to 31 March 2026 with the possibility of extension
Hours per week: Up to 1.0 FTE
Position Grade: Staff Specialist
Salary: As per the award

About the role:
We have an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic team leading our approach to the provision of quality care to clients of the Department of Correctional Health.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide integrated clinical services to patients designated as under your direct care, within the Correctional Health Service delivery model to patients with a mental health disorder.
  • Provision of a Psychiatric diagnostic service for inpatients, advice on psychopharmacology and psychological interventions, risk assessments, acute psychiatric management of patients who have attempted suicide or deliberately self-harmed, opinions pertaining to the Mental Health Act, assessment of capacity to consent to or refuse treatment and short term interventions including supportive psychotherapy.
  • Provide clinical leadership and support to the Correctional Health service clinicians in the management of their clients mental health needs;
  • Maximise patient participation in decision making and choices in the care planning process.
  • Maintain positive liaison with families, carers and community providers including General Practitioners, community agencies and non-Government organisations;
  • Registrar supervision according to RANZCP requirements, and education of RMOs.
  • Promotion of good patient care and the good reputation of the department and the hospital.

Selection Criteria:
•    Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent’s Health Australia.
•    Possess, or be eligible to possess, specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia and obtain a provider number from Medicare to practice;
•    Possess Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialist’s State Award;
•    Demonstrated knowledge, skills and high standards of clinical practice in Mental Health commensurate to experience which is appropriate to the requirements of the position;
•    Demonstrated experience in the psychiatric support of clients from marginalised populations, with a preference to experience with patients within correctional setting;
•    Demonstrated commitment to teaching at speciality registrar, junior medical officer and undergraduate levels;
•    Demonstrated management ability in clinical service planning and the provision of a client focused, comprehensive, high quality and cost effective clinical service with knowledge and commitment to the implementation of best practice and clinical service innovation;
•    Demonstrated ability to provide high quality compassionate medical care as evidenced by recent practice experience in working congenially and collaboratively as both a leader and member of a multidisciplinary team, and as a provider of services that engender high levels of patient
