Job Summary

Under the direction of clinical geneticists (MD/DO) and /or certified genetic counselors (CGC), the genetic counselor assistant (GCA)
will be responsible for supporting the counseling, testing, and diagnosis provided by the clinic. The GCA will interview patients and
document personal and family medical history prior to patient visit, coordinate joint visits with the CGCs, MD/DO, RDs and other
ancillary staff, obtain testing authorization and approval, prepare samples for transportation to laboratories, facilitate follow up with referring healthcare providers and laboratory personnel and other patient preparation and follow
up tasks to support the clinic staff.

Essential Functions

  • Assist genetic counselors and geneticists with all aspects of patient intake, genetic counseling , test coordination and documentation. Learn all aspects of clinical areas and work independently coordinating clinical care and patient visits.
  • Interviews patients and documents personal and family medical history consistent with documentation guidelines and regulatory standards. Documentation of pedigrees in electronic Pedigree drawing software for inclusion in the medical record.
  • Preparation of letters of medical necessity and denial appeals.
  • Contact laboratories to determine all necessary steps for genetic testing and act as a liaison with laboratories to ensure all samples, required forms and consents are completed and received.
  • Request insurance authorizations for genetic testing and perform insurance appeals for all denied testing. Follow up on authorizations approvals and denials with clinic staff and patients/families.
  • Research and complete medical literature searches for relevant articles and utilize databases for genetic test result analysis.
  • Prepare samples for transportation to laboratories within and outside of the hospital. Obtain non-blood samples (urine, saliva, cheek swab, etc) for testing ordered. Follow up on outstanding test results and unreported results.
  • Create and maintain mutation/variant database and maintain sample database when necessary.

Qualifications

  • Preferred Bachelor's Degree or equivalent biology/health science
  • 1 year of relevant experience patient/family contact in a community or medical setting, previous experience with clinical projects either in an administrative or clinical role, demonstrated knowledge of medical practice terminology Required
  • 1 year of relevant experience Prior Authorizations Experience Preferred
